It was only six degrees when I woke up today. Watching the wildlife bustle about in my backyard in the woods sparked this poem about Nature's true perfection.
Enduring the cold of 6 degrees
Squirrels sentry in frozen trees
The Cardinal pecks at icy seed
Still has to fill his hungry need
The fresh new snow lays crunchy now
Hemlocks bend in semi bows
In a woodpile chipmunks reside
Their acorn stash they cleverly hide
Sporting ice the brook is sleeping
No sound it makes when by me creeping
Pine branches sway and creak with cold
Some will fall that are frail or old
Deeply nature lies at rest
A perfect scheme, one she knows best,
Will bring her round and in she'll ring
Her goddess gift...a perfect Spring!
