Several Stores Will Be Removing Certain Beef Products from Their Shelves

Pat Anthony
According to recent reports, Harris Teeter and several other stores have recalled beef products that are labeled as Nature's Harvest 85% Lean Organic Ground Beef as it may contain E. coli.

The United States Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service, also referred to as FSIS, reports the recalled ground beef contains E. coli. A total of almost 35,000 pounds of beef is involved in this recall.

The beef that is part of this recall was shipped to locations in North Carolina as well as to California, New Jersey, New York, Washington State and Wisconsin.

At this time the beef recalled involves packages of Nature's Harvest 85% Lean Organic Ground Beef only. Consumers with products that fit the descriptions should return the recalled beef to the place of purchase for a refund. Anyone preferring to dispose of the recalled beef is asked to package it in a matter that would prevent animals from consuming the meat.

This beef recall is considered a Class I recall. According to the Food Safety and Inspection Service a Class I recall is defined as a health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse healthy consequences or death.

This recall information was also posted on the website for Price Chopper and can be viewed here.

The recalled products include:

6 ounce packages of Nature's Harvest Organic Ground Beef Brick with use or freeze by dates of 12-30-10 or 01-08-11.

16 ounce packages of Nature's Harvest Organic Ground Beef Brick with use or freeze by dates of 12-28-10 or 01-06-11.

16 ounce packages of Nature's Harvest Organic Ground Patty with four 4 ounce patties that have the freeze or use by dates of 12-30-10 or 01-08-11.

To date there have been no illnesses reported due to the recalled beef and this is considered a voluntary recall. To view more information visit this website.

The E. coli issue that prompted the beef recall was discovered when microbiological samplings were done. Consumers with questions may check for more information online by using AskKaren.gov. This is a virtual representative that is available 24 hours a day.
