Recalled Model is the "Bowflex Ultimate 2" Sold from June 2005 to August 2007

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced on Thursday that Nautilus was voluntarily recalling its Bowflex Ultimate 2 Home Gyms. About 68,000 of the home gyms are involved.

The problem, as the CPSC describes it, is that "the fasteners used to secure the rod box to the frame of the equipment can come loose, allowing the resistance rods or rod box to separate and strike the user or a bystander."

There have been ten reports of the rod box separating, including three reports of injuries, which involved bruised arms, sore elbows, and a sore back.

The CPSC says that you should stop using the gym immediately until you make repairs. Registered owners are being sent free repair kits. If you own one of the gyms and haven't received a repair kit by the end of the first week in January 2008, you should contact Nautilus.

The gyms involved in the recall were sold from June 2005 to August 2007, through specialty fitness retailers nationwide and through direct sales, for about $2,300. "Bowflex Ultimate 2" is printed on the vertical part of the frame. There is a photograph of the gym on the CPSC announcement.

The gyms were manufactured by Land America Ltd., of China, and imported by Nautilus Inc., of Vancouver, Wash.

For more information, call Nautilus at (800) 259-9019 between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Pacific time Monday through Friday. You can also get further information at the company's website, at www.bowflex.com -- click on the small "Safety Notices" link at the bottom of the page.

The CPSC had previously issued this recall alert on October 17, but then withdrew it the next day.

According to Wikipedia, there were two previous recalls of earlier Bowflex models. One was in January, 2004, when 420,000 Bowflex machines were recalled due to mechanical problems, and the other was in November, 2004, when nearly 800,000 Bowflex machines were recalled after reports of the machines breaking.
