Who Needs to Stop for Directions?

Mike Bacon
I am one of these people that can get lost in my own home. Well, maybe not quite that bad, but I have a lousy sense of direction. I finally decided it was time t get myself a GPS for the car.

After shopping around I finally found the Magellan RoadMate 1475T at Staples for $299.99. After using is for a couple of weeks, I would say I got a bargain.

The Magellan RoadMate 1475T has a lot of great features that caught my eye in the first place. One thing I really liked is that it is fairly compact, and doesn't take up a lot of room.

I noticed right away though that the voice of the Magellan RoadMate 1475T is a bit annoying. You can turn the voice off though. That is fine as long as you have someone in the car with you to give you the turn by turn directions, but if you are alone, you might want to grit your teeth and put up with the voice.

One of the best things about the Magellan RoadMate 1475T is the Highway Lane Assist feature, which actually tells you the proper lane to be in so that you don't miss an interchange or an exit. I can't tell you how many times I was in the wrong lane to take an exit, when I have been on the freeway. In fact that is one reason I used to hate driving on the freeway system. There is nothing worse than the sudden realization that you are about to go twenty miles out of your way because you can't get to the exit in time.

The Magellan RoadMate 1475T has a feature called OneTouchâ„¢ that you can use to set up a list of favorite destinations, so you can find them with one touch of the screen later. This is a great way to set up a friend's location, or a favorite restaurant that might be complicated to get to.

The Magellan RoadMate 1475T even has a spell check or sorts. It uses this to find the cities you type in, so that if you get the spelling wrong, it will offer you a list of possible names.

The Points of Interest are a bit off kilter though. It seems like they don't update the database very often. I tested this feature out when I first got the Magellan RoadMate 1475T, and it failed to find several businesses and restaurants that were around the corner. Some of these had been there for years. Frankly, this is not a feature I plan to use much anyway, but It was worth mentioning.

For the most part I have been very happy with the Magellan RoadMate 1475T.
