Despite outgaining Maryland by 200 yards and keeping the ball 19 minutes longer than the Terrapins, the Naval Academy Midshipmen were not able to achieve a fourth quarter comeback against the Terrapins. Thanks to a fourth down goal line stand when Kenny Tate stopped Navy quarterback Ricky Dobbs at the one-yard line with 34 seconds left, Maryland sealed victory in a game marked by turnovers & huge penalties.

Maryland jumped to a 14-0 first quarter lead, and led 14-7 at halftime. However, Navy did have the chance to make the game a rout, with four different drives within the Maryland 20, including drives of 52, 63, and 66 yards. All of these drives scored zero points, thanks to a field goal bouncing off the upright and two Ricky Dobbs fumbles, each on the Maryland one yard line. Another Navy mistake, in clock management, was at the end of the first half, when Dobbs was tackled deep in Maryland territory, but Navy allowed the clock to run out before the field goal unit could come to the field. Navy did pull even in the fourth quarter on a Ricky Dobbs one-yard run, but Maryland scored a fourth quarter field goal, which ultimately decided the game.

Maryland running back Davin Meggett ended the game with 8 rushes for 105 yards and a touchdown. Navy had five people rush for over 50 yards, including Vince Murray, who rushed 14 times for 112 yards, and Dobbs, who ran 29 times for 63 yards and a score. Dobbs also lost both Navy fumbles.
