Navy Pier Offers a Summer of Entertainment in Chicago

Christine Bude Nyholm
Navy Pier in Chicago is a top tourist attraction in the Midwest. Located on the lakefront, Navy Pier presents boundless opportunities for fun and entertainment for the entire family. Navy Pier is a year around attraction, but summertime is especially active, with boat rides, tours, the Giant Ferris wheel, Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, strolling characters, Tall Ships Sailing, IMAX 3D movies, fireworks, lakefront restaurants, museums and entertainment.

The official summer season started at Navy Pier on Memorial Day weekend, with the opening of the Cirque Shanghai: Cloud 9 acrobatic show and the weekend fireworks display. In addition to the special events at Navy Pier, there are numerous places to eat and drink, with a view of the lake.

Fireworks have become a summer tradition at Navy Pier. There are over 30 fireworks shows planned for Navy Pier for the 2010 season. The fireworks shows are presented by Melrose Pyrotechnics, with accompanying soundtracks by Jack FM and B96.

The Navy Pier AeroBalloon returned in May and will be offering rides above the lakefront through October. The AeroBalloon simply floats up in the air over Navy Pier and Lake Michigan. The Navy Pier Ferris Wheel also gives visitors a bird's eye view of Chicago. The Wave Swinger lifts riders up 14 feet in the airs and swings them around.

Cirque Shanghai: Cloud 9 has returned to Navy Pier for a fifth season. Performed on the Pepsi Skyline Stage, Cirque Shangai: Cloud 9 is an acrobatic show based on Chinese folklore outlining the nine levels of the sky.

There are various boat rides launched from Navy Pier, including the Shoreline Chicago River Architecture Cruises, Seadog Speedboat Rides and lunch and dinner cruises in Lake Michigan. Compare the various cruises to see which is most interesting to you. Some of the cruises travel up the Chicago River and others travel along the Lake Michigan shoreline. Either way, the cruses are a terrific way to get a fresh perspective of the city skyline.
