Navy Yard Opens for Bike Tour
Neighborhood: Fort Greene

If you live in Brooklyn, or at least travel through frequently, then chances are you've always wondered what the Navy Yard on the East River is really like.

Inquiring minds will finally get their chance to experience the Brooklyn Navy Yard in all its glory and intrigue this Sunday, September 26.

Urban Oyster, a local walking tour company founded by Cindy VandenBosch, is leading a bicycle tour of the navy yard. Bicyclists should be excited since the tour will allow them the chance to explore the grounds, which are otherwise off-limits.

The tour will focus on not only the physical exploration of the grounds but also an in-depth look at how the yard transitioned from a leading shipbuilding facility to an urban sustainable industrial park. Bet you didn't know that the yard is home to solar- and wind-powered street lamps, wind turbines, and other green features.

Oh, and you'll get an awesome view of the waterfront.

The Navy Yard is scheduled to open to the community in the fall of 2011.

The Brooklyn Navy Yard Bicycle Tour will start at the corner of Sands and Gate streets in Fort Greene at 1:45 PM, September 26. Tickets are $24 but members of the Brooklyn Historical Society and the Brooklyn Greenway Initiative pay $20. Advance tickets and helmets are both required.
