The Nazca Lines are located in the Nazca Desert, a high arid plateau approximately fifty miles between the towns of Nazca and Palpa on the Pampas de Jumana in Peru. This plateau is approximately 15 miles wide and runs approximately 37 miles parallel to the Andes and the Pacific Ocean. The landscape of this plateau is compiled of pebbles coated in iron oxide, alluding to a rich red color.
The geoglyphs are shallow designs etched into the floor of this plateau. Anthropologists suggest the geoglyphs were created by use of wooden stakes, used to remove the red pebbles of the landscape, sketching the design into the desert floor. In all its simplicity, the removal of these pebbles revealed the layer of white earth beneath the red pebbles, forming the foundation for the giant sketches. Stakes found near the geoglyphs were carbon dated correlating to the existence of the geoglyphs.
The mysteries of the Nazca Lines begin with the size of the luminous sketches ranging from 660 feet to over 2000 feet in size. Given the great size of these geoglyphs created in 200 B.C. to 900 A.D., one questions how they were created without distortion or aerial technology. The designs of these geoglyphs appear as multiple lines within close range making it incredibly tough to distinguish the intricate designs of the Nazca Lines.
Further compounding this mystery is the significance of these geoglyphs. Interpretations of the Nazca Lines range from religious significance to the possibility of a celestial airline strip, to a giant astronomical calendar.
The primitive Nazca civilization believed the God's in the sky could see the geoglyphs. The Nazca's intention was to point to the places on the distant horizon where the sun and other celestial bodies set.
Nazca is an extremely dry windless climate with limited rainfall. Geometric geoglyphs invoked the aid of the deities associated with water availability. Ritualistic worship included burnt offerings, small burn pits were discovered illuminating the small shrines used in the Nazca religious practices. Stylized geoglyphs formulated in the essence of animals, humans, and plants became iconic fertility symbols, in the ritualistic worship for crop fertility.
Another well-known figure is known as the astronaut. This figure features a well-rounded head and appears friendly. Is this a God or celestial assistant? The mystery of the development of the Nazca Lines without celestial assistance has yet to be established. Reasonable unquestionable documentation that explains the aerial size sketches without aerial ability does not exist. The mystery continues, "Are the Nazca Lines proof of celestial assistance."
