NBA All-Star Player Kobe Bryant China Web Blog

Kevin Smith
Recently superstar NBA guard Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers has announced an agreement made with the largest Chinese information web portal SINA.com. The agreement involves Kobe writing a blog for the Chinese website. Kobe Bryant, if not the most popular player in the NBA, is one of the top three most popular players in the NBA.

Kobe Bryant has a rather large following among the huge Chinese population; second only to China's own Yao Ming. The fact that he gets the opportunity to blog for the biggest information web portal in China, the fastest-growing country in the world today, is huge. This is going to inspire even more Chinese to pursue careers as professional basketball players.

The launch of Kobe Bryant's Chinese website will not be translated in any other language. This means that the blog that Kobe writes for his Chinese website will be exclusively for the Chinese population. Of course, because Kobe Bryant does not speak or write Chinese, his blog postings will be translated by those who work for SINA.com.

When asked if he was worried about his words being misconstrued by translators, Kobe advise that he is not worried about it. Even though he himself will not be able to read the translated versions of his postings, he respects the Chinese culture and their guidelines, and that his postings will be accurately translated. Kobe Bryant has made it known that he would like to do this in other languages as well. Other than English, Kobe Bryant is fluent in Italian, but has been trying to learn the Chinese language.

The only other NBA player with a website on this Chinese information web portal, is Yi Jianlian of the New Jersey Nets. According to SINA.com, nearly half of their visitors who frequent the sports section of their website are basketball fans. China's estimated NBA fan base almost equals the full population of the United States. Even though China has another basketball player besides Yao Ming playing in the NBA, which is Yi Jianlian, Kobe Bryant is more favored among NBA fans in China.

Yao Ming is absolutely China's biggest basketball star, but with him out of the picture it's Kobe Bryant. With Kobe having expanded online into China via SINA.com, we should expect to see more inspired young basketball players rise out of China. We should also expect China's basketball team to be contenders in future summer Olympic games.
