NBA Draft Team Results: Winners and Losers

Nick Meyer

The 2011 NBA Draft came and went without a ton of fanfare, but it could have a big impact on which teams make a move next season.

While a lockout looms, the next season will be telling once it does get underway and some of the draft team winners and losers start to be revealed. Of course, many of these guys are 18-20 years old so it will be a while before fans really know who's destined for stardom and who could be a dreaded "bust," but many things will be revealed in 2011-2012.

The draft saw a number one pick from Duke, Kyrie Irving, taken by the Cleveland Cavaliers despite only playing in 13 total games last year for the Blue Devils. Irving's return in the first round of the NCAA Tournament helped put Duke over the hump against Michigan in a game they nearly lost, but Irving was playing on a bad foot and Duke got bounced in the second round.

He'll have a chance to play plenty of minutes in his first year if he's healthy once Cleveland makes a few deals to get rid of their congested point guard situation. The Cavs also got Tristan Thompson out of Texas who is a quality big man with a high ceiling. Once these two develop, the Cavs will definitely be among the draft team winners, but it could take a while.

Here are more draft winners and losers from the draft in New York City:

NBA Draft Team Winners

Charlotte Bobcats- Michael Jordan's mettle as a front office exec. has been questioned many times over but he remains competitive and committed to bringing a winner to Charlotte. For the Bobcats to make a three-team deal and get Congo big man Bismack Biyombo and Connecticut PG Kemba Walker was an outstanding show of leadership by Jordan and co.

Biyombo is raw but he's young and an explosive athlete, if his age really is near 18 as he claims. He can be one of the best shot blockers in the league; a potential second coming of Ben Wallace. Walker is small but he's clutch and he's got tons of heart. He could be a better version of Jameer Nelson and these two fit in well together.

Detroit Pistons- Brandon Knight could be the steal of the draft at number eight, having been projected as high as number three for many weeks. The Kentucky PG is still young and can be another member of the new breed of athletic point guards with size who can get into the lane. He's not as far from being a true PG as draft analysis reports have suggested. Kyle Singler surprised some in the second round but he was once projected higher as well and can be a good complementary player if he regains shot consistency.

LA Lakers- Darius Morris is a sleeper second round pick, the Lakers' only pick, who can run the point and has the best court vision in the draft. He could be an Andre Miller-type player with more flash to his game which is perfect for his new team. Morris' shot needs a lot of work but he could be a steal.

Boston Celtics- Swapping selections and getting underrated Purdue big man JaJuan Johnson and then teaming him with spot-up shooter and college teammate E'Twaun Moore were prudent moves for Boston.

NBA Draft Team Losers

Phoenix Suns- Markieff Morris is a good defender, but his twin brother Marcus, who went after him, is better all-around and the Suns need more frontcourt scoring desperately.

Utah Jazz- The Jazz are here mostly by default because most teams made wise decisions in this year's draft, but the picks of Enes Kanter and Alec Burks, while solid, will do little to inspire confidence that the Jazz will be able to make a run at a conference title against teams that have more elite players.

That's the list for now, feel free to comment on your own 2011 NBA Draft winners and losers and thanks for reading.
