NBA Fantasy Basketball 2009-2010: Top 10 Point Guards to Draft

While Chris Paul has replaced Steve Nash has the premiere point guard in the NBA these days, there are still a dozen or so point guards who can contribute greatly to your Fantasy Basketball team this season. Here then is a list of the top 10 point guards to consider during a 2009-2010 Fantasy Basketball Draft.

Chris Paul (Hornets)

These days Paul may be in a league of his own, being the only point guard in the NBA to have scored over 20 points a game (22.8), while handing out over 10 (11.8) assists per contest last season; a feat he accomplished the previous year as well. Add to it the fact that Paul also led the league in steals (2.8 per game) by a wide margin, and that he rebounds well (5.5 per game), and you have a player sure to go in the first round of any Fantasy Basketball Draft. Yet that is not all, Paul can also hit a high percentage of shots from any where on the field and the foul line, which goes a long ways towards helping your team all around. Take Paul in the first round if you can.

Deron Williams (Jazz)

Deron Williams has eased past Steve Nash on most Fantasy Basketball boards and weighs in as the best point guard candidate after Chris Paul. Williams' numbers have been very steady over the last two years, and there is no reason to expect less than a season in the 18-19 points, 10 assists, per game range. Aside from that, Williams will go out and get you a steal or two a game, and his shooting percentage won't hurt your team either.

Steve Nash (Suns)

After a five year run as arguably the best point guard in the league, Nash has finally begun to slow down. Last season his scoring was down to 15.7 points per game and he fail to hand out over 10 assists per contest (9.7) for the first time since the 2004-05 season. Still, Nash is an outstanding three point (43.2 lifetime average), and free throw (90.0) shooter, and he will contribute greatly to your team in both categories. Though with 934 regular season games played under his belt, look for Nash to continue to slow down this season.

Derrick Rose (Bulls)

This rookie proved he was NBA ready last season by turning in a fabulous first year of play. Rose saw action in 37 minutes per game for the Bulls and posted decent numbers all around. With a bit of improvement this season, look for Derrick to give a Fantasy Basketball team 18 points, 8 assists, and 4 rebounds per game in 2009-10. The rest of his game may take a while to develop but right now he is not a bad option as is.

Tony Parker (Spurs)

Parkers' numbers took a healthy upswing last season as he paced the Spurs in scoring with 22 points a game. Add to it that Parker also handed out 6.9 assists per game, and you have a solid Fantasy Basketball point guard for a few more seasons to come. Aside from that Parker is not one who will help or hurt your team in other categories, though he will still get you an occasional steal or two. Still, few point guards will help you more in the two main categories than Tony, and he should not last more than a few rounds in a typical Fantasy Draft.

Devin Harris (Nets)

Devin Harris' numbers took a giant leap forward last season, with his scoring average rising close to 6 points a game to a career high of 21.3. Harris who averaged over 36 minutes of playing time per game last season also collected career highs in assists (6.9) and steals (1.7). Still, approach him with caution since back court mate Vince Carter is gone, and since Harris seldom remains healthy over the course of a full season.

Rajon Rondo (Celtics)

If you want to draft a point guard whose value is on the rise, then Rajon Rondo is your man. Rondo is coming off a magnificent run in the 2008-09 Playoffs in which he came within 4 total rebounds and 3 assists of averaging a triple double for the 14 games he played in. Over the course of the regular season Rondo's numbers took a big jump as well, and he average 11.9 points, 8.2 assists and 5.2 rebounds a game last year. The fact that Rondo will also get you almost two steals a game is a bonus. Steal Rondo in your Draft if he falls below the top three rounds.

Chauncey Billups (Nuggets)

The move back to Denver agreed with Billups who posted some fabulous numbers last season. Chauncey will help your team in scoring (17.9 ppg last season), assists (6.4), and shooting (91.3 FT PCT, 41.0 3PT PCT), and remains a solid Fantasy Basketball point guard option. Look for his numbers to hover around those marks in 2009-2010.

Jose Calderon (Raptors)

Calderon is as close to automatic as there is from the foul line hitting 98.1% of free throws last season.
Jose was also good for over 40% of his three point attempts, and he handed out 8.9 assists per game. An underrated performer whose career is on the rise, Calderon is not a bad option to have as a point guard.

Jason Kidd (Mavericks)

Kidd has now logged in over 1100 regular season games in his NBA career and his best years are clearly behind him. Having said that, he still averaged over 35 minutes a game last season, and handed out 8.7 assists per game. One of the best rebounding Guards in the league, Kidd averaged 6 rebounds a game for the 13^th year in a row in 2008-09. This future Hall of Famer will also help you out with a few steals per game. The wheels have started to come off here, but look for Kidd to hold off Father Time for at least one more season.
