Several NBA players are gearing up to head overseas to tear up the court. With the current lockout, the players are not even sure if the regular NBA season will start on time, if at all for 2011-2012. The NBA Players Association even sent members a memo encouraging them to head overseas to play. Billy Hunter, union leader said, "If the owners will not give our players a forum in which to play basketball in the United States, they risk losing the greatest players in the world to international basketball federations that are more than willing to employ them." So, who does the NBA risk losing?
Maurice Evans
Dozens of players have talked about crossing the oceans, but the most recent has been Maurice Evans of the Washington Wizards. At this point, Evans is an unrestricted free agent and can go where he pleases and will not need a FIBA letter of clearance, reports AOL Sporting News. Evans is reportedly talking to Turkey's Anadolu Efes and Spain's Real Madrid.
Deron Williams
Nets' point guard Deron Williams is not sitting around waiting for this lockout to be solved either. While subject to approval by FIBA, Williams is looking to play with Turkish team Besiktas. Last season, Allen Iverson graced the court for this team.
Dwight Howard
While Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic has not made an absolute decision yet on whether he will head overseas, he is not against the idea either. Howard is reported saying that he will, "consider playing in China or Europe this upcoming season if there is no end in sight for the current NBA lockout." He is definitely one of the biggest names in basketball considering a move overseas depending on the outcome of the current NBA lockout.
Steve Nash
While he is loyal to the Suns, he wants to work and a lockout prevents this. He has not said anything about definitely going overseas himself, but his manager has mentioned the possibility if the NBA lockout persists. If Nash was to jetset, it would likely be a team in China.
All-Stars in Philippine Exhibitions
This weekend a team of NBA all-stars are heading to the Philippines to play in a pair of exhibition. These players are reported to include Derek Fisher, Kobe Bryant, Chris Paul, Kevin Durant, Derrick Rose, Derrick Williams, Tyreke Evans and Javale McGee, according to AOL Sporting News.
