NBC Attempts to Ruin 2010 Olympic Coverage for West Coast, Extends Big Middle Finger

NBC Will Tape Delay the 2010 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony and Nearly All Events

Ryan Christopher DeVault
The 2010 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony will be tape delayed for the West Coast. Tape delayed; even though the Olympics are in the same time zone. It's almost too unbelievable to fathom, and flat out ridiculous that NBC has no confidence in their programming. The fear that viewers won't tune in to a 6:00 p.m. coverage of the Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony has caused them to push back coverage to begin at 7:30 p.m. on NBC. Yes Washington State, even though you are mere miles from where the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics are taking place, you won't be allowed to watch it live.

That's not the end of the tape delays though, as NBC will be tape delaying nearly every event at the 2010 Winter Olympics. It will be a very rare event that the West Coast gets to see live, and every big medal event is going to be tape delayed if you live in the Pacific or Mountain Time Zone. If you live on the East Cost or in the Central Time Zone you don't have to worry, because NBC will be bringing you just about every event live. For the time zone where the Olympics are actually being held, NBC is giving you a big middle finger, because they don't care if you find out the results of events before they are even shown on television in your time zone.

This was supposed to be a year where everyone in the U.S. could enjoy the Winter Olympics on our own time schedule with the games held in Vancouver. For half the country that is going to work out just fine, but for the West half it is going to be the same-old story of NBC disrespecting its viewers by pretending that they are going to give live coverage but not actually providing it. Don't forget to read the small print if you are looking at any television listings for the next two weeks, because even though the Olympics are in the PST, it doesn't meant residents in the PST will be able to enjoy anything live. Did you think the three hour delay on the Opening Ceremonies was bad? Wait till the results of every Olympic event are spoiled for you before you can watch them.

if you want to complain to a real human being about the tape delays, this NBC flack has been justifying it in media articles (Seattle Times, Sacramento Bee, etc), contact him directly to tell him what you really think:

Well, people on the east coast are not exactly having a great time with the coverage either. Still have to mute the news coverage in the evening to not hear results before the competition is shown. And forget about seeing the end of competitions like figure skating if you have a day job. At least for the next winter games(Russia)we'll all be on delay!

Worst sports coverage I have ever seen. So many commercials I feel like I'm watching an dusk to dawn movie. I don't really care what the news people think I want to see the events. Baaaah!!

Don't just boycott NBC. Boycott NBC's advertisers, and tell them why you are doing so. That's the only thing that will get NBC's attention.

Yep, I am a boycotter too.

Think of the absurdity...no one else in the world gets less live coverage than we Americans in the same time zone. It was bad enough when NBC made the swimmers do their finals at 10 am Bejing time in order to accomodate the East Coast.

How stupid is NBC's "leadership"!?!? People on the West Coast are used to watching sports events earlier than they are in NY (source of NBC's corporate brain farts).

Beyond my disappointment regarding Olympic coverage, I sincerely hope NBC fails and withers away...they provide no value to the world. Media dinosaurs such as NBC are out of touch - they must be related to the "leaders" of big banks...

I live in California, and if I want to watch all the events covered by NBC I will have to stay up until 3:30 am. The coverage started at 8 pm.

I have a cold and have been staying in all day, and even got myself out of bed to watch Olympic coverage. To my surprise, all that was shown in the afternoon was a female hockey event on CNBC - while NBC was showing infomercials.
Finally, by 8 actual coverage is happening - but they show so much gratuitous analysis and fluff at a desk/office [and commercials] for each hour theres maybe 20-30 minutes of actual sports. This is infuriating! And at 8pm - 3:30 am theres only one channel showing coverage so I can't switch between NBC affiliates during downtime between races.
UGH I am not staying up til 4 am for 2 weeks to watch this stuff!

Sorry to hear you can't watch direct coverage on NBC. I suggest you try watching Canadian Broadcasters as it is not time delayed in Canada. Unfortunately though you may see performances and results for athletes from other countries besides the US.

"NBC Attempts to Ruin", that's wrong, they HAVE ruined the games for those of us on the West Coast.

I'm on the west coast. I thought finally I get to watch the Olympics in real time. I would have never dreamed NBC would deny us that. I hope they go bankrupt for making such poor decisions. Obviously, they don't value their viewership. If we got to see the Olympics live, I would be glued to the TV. I won't be watching them this year. I'm boycotting NBC and getting my information from Vancouver's website. By the way I'm just going to boycott NBC in general.
