NBC Loses Passion for Hit Show "Passions"

The Characters of Harmony Will Be Missed

Miss Faith
All stay-at-home mothers and those that work and are guilty of changing their lunch schedule to catch their daily fix of "Passions" will possibly need to find another soap opera to fill their daily void. NBC recently announced that they will be canceling their hit show "Passions" in order to give the "Today" show four hours of air time. The contract with "Passions" runs until June with the network but since NBC will not add the extra hour of the "Today" show until fall; they will continue to run "Passions" until September. The last show on NBC will air on September 7, 2007. Even though the show is ranked number 4 among women 18-49 and is in a first place tie with "Days of Our Lives" with women 18-34, the ratings were still not enough to keep the show afloat with the network.

According to the NBC website, there has been talk all over the internet on how to keep the show going after NBC drops it. Fans are crossing their fingers and hoping that it will either continue in an online environment or that it will be picked up by another network. Passions debuted in June of 1999. Based in a fictional New England town of Harmony, the cast of Passions has seen their fill of odd happenings over the past 8 years. Some highlights from the show are the 300-year old witch, Tabitha, who used to be paired with "Timmy" the talking doll until his true-life and his Passions death in 2002. A year later the writers of the show gave Tabitha a child and named her Endora. These storylines were just a drop in the bucket of Passions' oddities.

Anything you can think of has been entwined into the storyline of Passions of the years. They have had portals to hell, zombies, mermaids, a tsunami, and everything in between. Last year they also did their own spoof of the DaVinci code and called it Passions Vendetta. But this was not the only time they spoofed a movie or well known storyline. They have also had their own versions of Pirates of the Caribbean, Titanic, Brokeback Mountain, The Wizard of Oz, and Bollywood.

However, even with the ongoing twists and turns of the show, nothing could keep it afloat. So it will join the list of other cancelled soap operas in the low-rating abyss, such as Another World, Santa Barbara, Sunset Beach, Port Charles, and Ryan's Hope. On September 7th, the show will go out with a bang and we will all say goodbye to the Cranes, Lopez-Fitgeralds, Bennetts, and Russells. There will be no more magic or love triangles or lesbian gangs roaming the streets of Italy. Unless the show is picked up by another network we will have one final laugh and one final moment with the characters of Harmony. Maybe by then, Teresa will have finally gotten her man. Stay tuned to find out.

I liked taking break from my hectic day to watch passions. I like the today show, but this is too much. I live in WV and we see the first 3 hours of the today show in the morning and around 2pm the last hour because that was when passions was on. This is so stupid. I now just turn the tv on another station and now I don't even watch the today show in them morning. I hope they bring back passions on nbc or at least have it on the soap channel.
