NBC News Anchor Brian Williams Bows Before Obama

Mark Whittington
Toward the end of a documentary on NBC, NBC News anchor Brian Williams, in saying goodbye to President Barack Obama, appears to bow before the President. It seemed to be an unconscious gesture, but one sure to generate controversy.

The idolatry with which many in the mainstream media regard President Obama has been noted widely before. MSNBC commentator Chris Matthews once opined how the thought of President Obama caused a thrill to run up his leg. Media critic Bernard Goldberg has even published a book about the media's relationship with President Obama, entitled A Slobbering Love Affair: The True (And Pathetic) Story of the Torrid Romance Between Barack Obama and the Mainstream Media.

The relationship between the media and President Barack Obama seems to go beyond just the usual biased reporting, in this case accentuating the positive and ignoring the negative. There seems to be actual love and even worship by the media of Barack Obama.

NBC News anchor Brian Williams bowing before President Obama seems to be a symptom of this phenomenon. A President of the United States is due a certain degree of respect just for the office he occupies, no matter how personally he might be despised or how unbearable his policies may be. That is why he is addressed as Mr. President or sir and he is given the big house, the big plane, and other accouterments of office.

But it is not done to bow before any President of the United States as if he were a king or a sovereign. The President of the United States is the elected head of government and state of a republic, known as the United States of America. The people retain sovereignty and, for good or ill, exercise it by electing people to the Presidency and the Congress.

A king derives his power from God, by tradition, and is answerable only to God for his acts. The President of the United States derives his power from the Constitution and the people and is answerable to the people for his acts.

Brian Williams, by bowing before President Obama, has revealed a disturbing trend in the attitude of the media toward a President that they seem to admire. It is not enough for the media to believe that President Obama is a great President and that his policies are right and proper. By giving obeisance to President Obama, as if he were a Tudor monarch, Brian Williams seems to be suggesting that President Obama is not to be criticized, that his policies are not to be questioned. The media already avoids doing those things. Now it seems that the media, in the form of NBC News anchor Brian Williams, is saying that the rest of us should avoid it too.

As a Canadian who was taught and told that no American bows to another man, that the foundation of America was based on a moral war against monarchy, I was made ill to my stomach watching Obama choose to bow to a Saudi King. I was told by other Americans that he was just being polite and following customs. Do they not understand what that custom means? Now, watching Brian Williams try to make light of it by choosing to bow to Obama I interpret its purpose as the negation of the American foundation. Is America ready for that?

The writer thinks a friendly nod is a bow? He's just trying to generate a controversy, where this is none. The best way to deal with these people is to ignore them.

People bowing to eachother is just fine. If and when Mr.Obama stops returning the bow, watch out.

How about we tell Obama it's time for him to shut the hell up. If all the people around the world would pay us back for what we done for them,America would be just fine. We don't need to apologize to anyone. How about we tell Obama it's time for him to shut the hell up. This article is just more super-trivial, non-issue, manufactured propaganda from the Republican camp. It was a nod goodbye, nothing more or less. I use the exact same gesture to a half dozen of my co-workers every day when I leave the office, and what's more, they usually nod back. Does that mean I worship them? Of course not, it's simply professional (and friendly) respect. Since when is being respectful to the President worthy of such hysteria and criticism? Do you people realize what you sound like?

Bowing before the liberal messiah (and BHO bows before a Saudi King?..the world's gone nuts). Most or all new age occult channelers & their channeling spirits channel great stuff about Obama...that he's an enlightened light-worker, that he's reincarnated from another planet, that he's here unify the world and prepare it for a global ascension, etc. More at http://dispolitico.wordpress.com Recommendation: Start preparing for rough times: Water purifier, protection, stored food, eradicating debt, making hide-outs, camping stuff, spare lights, wind up radio, plan B, plan C when things get real bad. Good news....faithful believers in the true Jesus will be raptured, probably only months after Israel bombs Iran, and when a coalition of Islamic/Communist forces attack Israel but are miraculously destroyed by the God of the Bible fullfilling Ezekiel 38-39

Would ANY left leaning sheeple please offer an unbiased arguement that the media does not worship the Dear Leader?

    No-one?

While the media typically worships the ground Obama walk, I think this story is just the result of a slow news day. The "bow" looks more like a courteous nod then anything else; no need to make it anything more then it is.

I just watched the video and despite the controversy, that isn't a bow. It's a head nod and the POTUS nods back. I actually do the same nod when saying goodbye so not a big deal. Let's focus on the issues (there sure are a lot of them) and not this nonsense.
