NC Congressman Heath Shuler Plans to Carry a Gun in the Future

In response to the Arizona shooting rampage, NC Congressman Heath Shuler has confirmed that he will carry a gun himself for protection at state public events.

"I, like many of my constituents and staff in Western North Carolina, strongly support the Second Amendment and do exercise our right to legally and safely carry a firearm," Shuler (Democrat-Waynesville) said in a statement to the Times-News.

Shuler was first quoted by The Politico newspaper on Monday as saying he would be armed for future events.

"You never think something like this will happen, but then it does," Shuler said. "After the elections, I let my guard down. Now I know I need to have (my gun) on me. We're going to need to do a much better job of with security at these events."

Shuler has he's encouraging his staff members to apply for the same NC conceal and carry permits he already has. He does not intend to carry his gun in the District of Columbia, where gun control laws are stricter than NC but a handgun ban no longer exist due to a 2008 Supreme Court ruling.

Heath Shuler is a former quarterback of the Washington Redskins and a NC representative who challenged Nancy Pelosi for the position of minority leader for the congressional Democrats.

Is that wise? I don't think so. But hey.

Humm - let's see? If there had been return fire... Maybe an innocent 9 year old might still be alive, as well as at least some of the other innocent people that were injured or killed. All it would have taken was one person to take the shooter out to save those other lives

If a Democrat does this, what will Republicans do?

  • John Myers1/12/2011

Of course the man has the right to do so, but I'm not a believer that more guns is the answer. Imagine if there had been return fire on Saturday? Wow!

I think we live in desperate times, if it makes him feel safer, he has a right to do so. cheers ;)
