NCAA Football National Signing Day 2009: Southern Cal

A Very Competitive Year with USC Claiming the Cream-of-the-Crop

National Signing Day 2009 is the day in NCAA football in which everyone wins. Even when you lose a recruit, you can have the challenge of trying to find that "diamond in the rough." It seems like every year, USC just gets better and better. This is the reason why: they claim the best recruits that cover the holes left from individuals like Mark Sanchez.

This year is no different. USC has claimed what most people would call the best QB in this years incoming freshmen class in Matt Barkley. He's a big kid at 6'3" and seems to have a great deal of potential.

They also signed Devon Kennard from the Arizona-area, who seems to be a force to be reckoned with at the DE position. These two signees give USC team a few more pieces to work with as they continue their reign of consistent play year-after-year.

They also seem to have a verbal agreement with ILB Vontaze Burfict, who seems to be one of the best linebackers available in this year's incoming freshmen class.

USC also has had a verbal agreement with Frankie Telfort. I think that he's a top 5 talent as an OLB. I think the tandem that Vontaze Burfict and Frankie Telfort can bring to the USC football team should have Pete Carroll salivating this offseason.

USC is consistent. The way they continue their level of play is by creating havoc on the defensive end of the football. I think that with these signees, USC can once again keep their #1 Ranked defense playing at the same level. I think that the signing of Matt Barkley will go down as being the biggest signing of the 2009 National Signing Day. With Mark Sanchez walking away and taking his chances in the NFL Draft, USC was lacking a QB to develop. We saw Pete Carroll voice his opinion of the departure of Mark Sanchez, and he showed a level of concern a coach would have when you lose a very talented QB, but with the addition of Matt Barkley, he can finally move forward because Matt Barkley brings a lot to the table.

What made this day so special for USC was the fact that they signed players that fit the needs of the team. USC also added much needed depth at the defensive end and line backer positions. I think that USC has a greater foundation to work upon, and will come out ferocious on the defensive end once again this year.
