Myles Brand earned a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Rochester in 1967. Brand spent his life as an educator and facilitator at the collegiate level. He spent most of his life leading various departments at a myriad of universities throughout the United States. In 2002 Myles Brand left his tenure with Indiana University to take presidency of the NCAA. He is often remembered for being the one to fire the great basketball coach Bob Knight, though the way he impacted students as dean, department head, chair of philosophy, etc... will leave a much greater impact on thousands of students and alumni.
Myles Brand was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer on January 17th of this year. After his diagnosis he resumed his day to day activities with the NCAA and managed to deal with the disease while still maintaining a semi-regular lifestyle. During this time he kept up with the day to day activities of the NCAA though his number of public appearances decreased. In the last few weeks Brand removed himself from most of the day to day operations involved in heading the NCAA.
Myles David Brand, born May 17, 1942 passed away today, September 16, 2009. He will be fondly remembered and his successes should inspire us all. For more information on Myles Brand, follow the links below.
