The second number one seed for the NCAA tournament is the Pittsburgh Panthers. The Panthers also come from the incredibly tough Big East Conference. With their inclusion as the second number one seed, both of the top two seeds come from the Big East. Pittsburgh will be playing in the East Region.
The third team to be an NCAA tournament number 1 seed is the North Carolina Tarheels. UNC is from the ACC, and was the preseason number one seed. Many people felt that they would be the team to beat all season. However, some injuries during the year managed to slow them down. UNC will be in the South Region.
The fourth and final number 1 seed for the NCAA tournament is the UConn Huskies. The Huskies are coming off of their all-time classic six overtime game against Syracuse in the Big East Tournament. Despite the early exit in their tournament, and two losses to fellow number one seed Pittsburgh, the Huskies managed to get the fourth and final number one seed in the NCAA tournament. UConn is playing in the West Region.
Big East Gets Three Number One Seeds
With Louisville, Pittsburgh and UConn getting number one seeds in the NCAA tournament, the Big East has three of the four spots. Did the Big East deserve three number one seeds? Well, they were the best conference throughout the season, with a heavily top loaded cast of schools. To survive as well as they did shows the Big East is very talented, and many of the other potential number one seeds failed to capitalize by winning big late down the stretch. This includes schools like Oklahoma, which limped to the gate after a strong start.
Did Memphis Deserve an NCAA Tournament Number 1 Seed?
Some people feel that Memphis deserved to be a number one seed. They have been on a great streak, however, the downside was their lack of strong opposition from within their conference. It's something that they can't be blamed for really, but yet comes back to haunt them once again.
Which Number One Seeds Play Each Other?
The bracket is set up so that in the Final Four, the Midwest Region plays the West. This means that potentially, the Louisville Cardinals would meet their Big East rivals, the UConn Huskies. That leaves the East to play the South, which would potentially have the Pittsburgh Panthers playing the UNC Tarheels. If the overall top two number one seeds met in the NCAA Championship game, it would have Louisville playing Pittsburgh in a Big East redux.
It's hard to argue with any of these teams being number one seeds in the NCAA tournament. Get ready to fill out your brackets, the games start in just a few days, and the number one seeds will be put to the test.
