Neanderthal - a Rhyming Rave on the Man in the Cave

Linda Ann Nickerson

Neanderthal was strong and brave;
He dragged the damsel to his cave.
She feared the woolly mammoth more
Until the wolf, he locked the door.

As sick as our secrets, truths we dread,
Things we ever leave unsaid,
Skeletons swept beneath the bed.
Neanderthal may not be dead.

She never knew she had a choice;
He didn't even hear her voice.
This man, who didn't walk upright,
He turned her days to darkest night.

As sick as our secrets, truths we dread,
Things we ever leave unsaid,
Skeletons swept beneath the bed.
Neanderthal may not be dead.

He didn't beat her up with fists,
But she was helpless to resist.
They never found the missing link;
His only mistress was the drink.

As sick as our secrets, truths we dread,
Things we ever leave unsaid,
Skeletons swept beneath the bed.
Neanderthal may not be dead.

He blamed it on his constitution;
Others called it evolution.
But a genuine inspection
Showed unnatural selection.

As sick as our secrets, truths we dread,
Things we ever leave unsaid,
Skeletons swept beneath the bed.
Neanderthal may not be dead.

    This struck me as a domestic abuse case as well, but then again we use the term Neanderthal to refer to men who are less than social, don't we? It's an interesting angle.

    Linda, that's deep, and sad; I hope it's not a personal experience description. I've seen the victims of family violence (physical and mental) for many years. The beast does truly still live amongst us, and a $700 suit will only cover it for so long.

    I like your work.
