Nebraska Mall Shooting

9 Dead, 5 Wounded

The Incident

Today, Wednesday, December 5th, a man with a rifle shot and killed 9 people and wounded 5 more. This took place at the Westroads Mall in Omaha, Nebraska. So far the details are unclear and the identity of the victims and the gunman are unknown. This is a devastating thing to have happen so close to Christmas, especially around lunchtime when shoppers all hit the mall to snag a present or two for their loved ones.

What's Next?

As usual, this tragedy is likely to be followed up on every news channel with "Violence in America" type stories and witness accounts. Expect Jack Thompson to blame it all on Grand Theft Auto or Manhunt 2.

But why does this happen so frequently in America and nowhere else in the world? Personally, I think it's the news itself. Stories like these will be shoved down our throats weekly. Oddly, no mention of the black woman who just killed her two toddlers in a gas station restroom. You'll have to Google that one because odds are you haven't heard about it. Is it because the victims were black children? Who knows.

What will come also usually includes strong campaigns on gun control, violence in the media, and of course, Charlton Heston making an appearance saying "Guns don't kill people. People kill people.

This incident will tarnish the mall for sometime and one has to wonder about the owners of some of the smaller stores and franchises. Imagine the devastating financial loss they will incur due to one idiot's copycat rampage.

It's not just the US, Robert, it's everywhere. Great reporting!

Interesting perspective, and I agree that the killers should not get so much press!

I heard about this and was wondering what was going on.

Apparently it was a 19 year old who was due in court. He left a suicide note that said he wanted to go out with a bang or something to that effect.

I heard about this first here on AC. How tragic. I doubt Heston will show up, though. He was diagnosed with Alzheimer's a few years ago.

    How horrible.
