Nebraska Vs. Oklahoma: 2010 Big 12 Championship Game TV Time & Predictions

Simon Nguyen
The 2010 Big 12 championship game between the Nebraska Cornhuskers and Oklahoma Sooners is set for Saturday December 4 (8:00 PM EST) at Cowboys Stadium. ABC Sports will broadcast the game. This will be the only meeting between the Cornhuskers and Sooners in 2010. Nebraska is #13 in the BCS standings, with a 6-2 conference record; Oklahoma ranks 9th in the country and first in the Big 12 South. This article provides predictions and TV time for the 2010 Big 12 football championship.

1) Cornhuskers-Sooners Head to Head

Saturday's Big 12 championship game will be the 86th meeting between Nebraska and Oklahoma. Since 2000, the two teams have played 7 times with the Sooners enjoying a 5-2 advantage. The two teams last met in November of last year, with Nebraska winning the contest. The 2010 Big 12 championship will be the last meaningful game for either team, as both do not have a shot at the national title. Additionally, this is also Nebraska's last game in the Big 12 as the school will move to another conference next year.

2) Taylor Martinez vs. Laundry Jones

The 2010 Big 12 championship game features two talented quarterbacks in Laundry Jones and Taylor Martinez. This will be the first ever meeting between Jones and Martinez. Oklahoma's Laundry Jones has been one of college football's best quarterbacks this year. The sophomore QB has thrown for nearly 4000 yards with 34 touchdowns. Nebraska's Martinez, on the other hand, has seen limited actions due to various injuries. The freshman quarterback has amassed to date 1435 yards and 9 TDs. As of this article, Martinez remains doubtful for the championship game due to a recent injury.

3) Bo Pelini vs. Bob Stoops

Since Bo Pelini became the Cornhuskers' coach in 2008, Nebraska has been on an upward swing and a Big 12 title may be the exclamation point. This year's team is solid in most aspects of the game. Bo Pelini's crew is 8th in points allowed and 25th in points scored. The one area the team has struggled is its passing game. Nebraska is shockingly 105th in the nation in passing yards per game. This shortcoming, however, is largely compensated by the Cornhuskers' terrific rushing game which ranks 8th overall. The key to Nebraska winning the championship is its passing defense. If the team can keep OU's quarterback Laundry Jones in check, Nebraska should be able to make its last game in the Big 12 a happy one.

Bob Stoops' team is the direct opposite of Nebraska. It is the rushing game that Oklahoma has struggled and not the passing game. The Sooners ranks 75th in rushing, averaging only 144 yards a game. Oklahoma's passing game has actually been the team's biggest strength this year, placing 4th in the country. Overall, Oklahoma is the nation's 16th best offense which is 9 places above the Cornhuskers. The contrast in style should make the Big 12 title game an intriguing affair.

My prediction for the 2010 Big 12 championship game between Nebraska and Oklahoma: the Cornhuskers win their last Big 12 game 23-20. Kickoff time for the game is 8:00 PM EST. ABC Sports will broadcast the highly anticipated game.
