My friend, Mike Hatz, has decided to pursue his dream of being in a band. Fans of metal, with a homegrown sound will be glad he did it, too. With Mike on bass, band-mates Nathan Jones on lead guitar and vocals and Mike Holsenback on drums, these three friends have produced their debut album titled "Nebulous." Now if only more folks would have the guts to give their dreams one honest try.
Mike allowed me the honor of doing a review of this work, and I'm glad to. Most musicians wouldn't dream of inviting a review of their first production. But these guys do, and it may be that they have nothing to fear. Tastes are as subjective to each person, but I like it. That aint just me being nice, either. I'm really not a nice guy, anyway. If something stinks, I'll say it. But, no. This piece is fun. I really enjoy heavy guitar. I dig the homegrown sound, and truly admire those who take pro-active steps in pursuit of what makes them happy.
"Nebulous," is produced by "No Records" out of Knoxville, Tennessee, and contains 11 songs, each with a strong beat, fast rhythm, and plenty of spirit. The titles are: 1) DKC; 2) Bring Time; 3)Psycloned; 4) Crania; 5) Orbit; 6) (We All Live 4 Da) Orange Submarine; 7) Living Hell; 8) Numb; 9) Tork; 10) Bobby Bolens Boogie; and 11) Jihad.
The positives of this production are: The beat, rhythm, and tone. Love that guitar, and dammit, it's a step in the right direction. I also like how the band isn't just "Thrash, thrash, and more thrash." Listeners can hear the band taking every approach they can, and experimenting with different styles. Some songs are fast, some are a little slower, and everyone of them sounds better than a lot of neophyte bands out there today. If you'd like to place an order, and show a fledgling band some artistic/financial support, check out a sample on YouTube.
About the only suggestions I might make would be to include a list of the lyrics with the music. I also had some trouble getting the CD to play, but that's not the band's fault, as much as it has something to do with the production process, and/or my CD player. Once I finally got the disc in a quality CD player.
So, congratulations to Hatz, Sack, and N8. Good job. Keep it up. I'll be looking forward to your next production, and will enjoy watching this band grow.
