Normally a faulty pillow and/or bad sleeping postures are the only two reasons for the pain in the neck when one wakes up in the morning. Here is a brief discussion on what type of pillow one should use and the correct sleeping postures.
A proper sleeping posture is the first step in keeping the spine, the neck and the lower back in perfect condition. In so far as hurting the neck while in sleep is concerned, there are only two reasons; the pillow and the position in which one sleeps.
What type of pillows one should use?
- If one has the habit of sleeping on the back for most of the time, then such persons should have a thin pillow. If this is not done, throughout the night the head is pushed forward straining the tissues in the neck. The stressed tissues cause pain while one gets up in the morning.
- Any one who has the habit of sleeping on the side for most of the time, then such person requires a long and firm pillow. This type of pillow will keep the head and the neck in a straight to the spine. In whatever the case, the pillow should not be too hard or too soft. At the same time the pillow should not be too short. If the pillow is too tall, then it pushes the neck up; it is like walking with the ear on the shoulder. If it is too short, then there is every chance of the neck falling while the person is sleeping. This may result in pain while one wakes up in the morning.

The correct sleeping posture is that the neck and the head should be in a straight line formation to the spine. In other words, the alignment should be like the one when we are standing or sitting.
- Some people sleep on their stomach with head turned to one side. This is not a good habit. It is as though one walks with head turned to one side. This sleeping posture strains the tissue too much and sooner or later it injures the tissues of the neck. It is advisable that this habit of sleeping on the stomach has to be given up as soon as possible. One of the best method of avoiding this habit is to keep a large pillow on the in the front and the other on the back of you. In the alternative, one can keep pillows on both the sides so that it prevents from rolling on to the stomach while one is in sleep.

These methods will help in getting rid of neck pain when one wakes up in the morning.
