Remember that this game is not just about mashing button! You have to time your button pressing with strumming the guitar. Many players lack the initial hand eye coordination to get their fingers in the right place, but practice will help you with this. Place your index finger on the green fret button and then line the rest of your fingers accordingly. Now when you're playing, don't ever move your hand that's covering the fret buttons. By keeping your hand in place your teaching yourself muscle control and forcing the use of fingers that you normally don't use, unless you're a really angry driver if you catch my drift.
Play on the Easy difficulty first then move up. This may sound like a basic tip, and it is, but many people, especially those who can actually play the guitar just pick the game up and expect to be able to beat every song with a huge score. Well just like with learning how to play a real guitar you're going to have to start with the basics and move up. Easy mode incorporates on three fret buttons, the green red and yellow, and once you have mastered this move on up to Medium where you'll be using the blue button.
As you move up in difficulty you will be forced to move your hand up and down on the guitar, and that's fine. Once you try Hard you'll be using every fret button on the guitar, so my best advice is to move every finger down one fret button when you encounter a long streak or Orange notes (Orange is the last fret button on the neck). The reason why I do this is because it is easier, and I have more control over my index finger then my pinky, so I have move it further, hitting the green fret button and the red fret button with ease, more so then the blue and orange with my pinky.
Make sure you hold notes out when they appear, this will help to increase your score a lot. Also when you have a very long note be sure to remember the whammy bar! By moving the whammy bar around during a long note will earn you big points, so keep that in mind, but don't go overboard, you don't want to miss upcoming notes by playing with the whammy bar too much.
Star Power is the feature that allows you to get the most points during a song. Once your star meter reaches a certain point you can engage this mode which will double all your points instantly. Try to use the Star power when you're on a x4 multiplier because it will become x8 during your time with the star power. Also using star power when you're low on health can increase your health back to full in and instant, as long as you hit notes. Remember that everything is doubled when you use your star power, including the amount of health you get for each correct note.
Star Power is obtained by hitting special notes, but if one of those is a long note, remember to use the whammy bar! Using the whammy bar on a long note that is part of a star combo will generate extra star power, possibly filling up your gauge. And if you know the song well enough remember to use star power in the larges not clusters because this will maximize the amount of points you receive during a song.
The last tip I have is remember you can strum the guitar up... and down. This will help a whole lot in songs that have very little or no space between note clusters. Just remember to get your timing down and listen to the rhythm and beat, don't just strum the guitar randomly because this will lead to a severe drop in your health.
These tips and tricks will easily earn you a spot on the top of any high score board. By using these tips and tricks you will easily get scores exceeding 100,000 and more often the not 150,000 will seem like no big deal, but only if you stick with the game and practice.

Post a CommentWes... I've been playing actual guitar for a while, and when I first saw this game I got the same impression, I thought it was going to be retarded. I thought why play a plastic one when I can play my black B.C. Rich Warlock? But seriously, this game is so much fun, and retardedly addicting. I love it. :)
I know a kid who wants this game..the kid plays guitar all the time on his real guitar..and at the cost of things it would seem to me that such a game would be childish compared to the real thing
My bad about the whammy bar, thanks for the correction, at least I know someone actually read my article :) Thanks for the comment.
Whammying on longer notes doesn't actually bring your score up any higher. Example, play Freebird on Medium difficulty. Play all the first few notes without using the whammy bar, stop right before you get to the first star power notes. Your score will be 942. Restart the song and do the same thing but this time whammy on each long note. Your score right before the star note will still be 942. The only time whammy really helps, though it is fun :) , is when you have star notes that are long, if you whammy on them your amount of star power will go up alot faster. Good article though. Guitar Hero is lots of fun. The first one's a bit annoying though just because the hammeron/pulloffs are broke :( I just dl the songs though to the 2nd one on 360.
