Need Help with Groceries? Angel Food Ministries Can Help

Heather Fisher
There are quite a few people in this country who need help with groceries. With the price of food increasing over the years, it's sometimes hard for low or even middle income families and seniors to afford the amount of groceries needed to get through a few weeks, let alone a whole month. There are even more people who don't know what kind of help that they can get from their community, simply because they rely on the government to send them money and pray that it will cover the cost of the essential needs from month to month. But sometimes help from the government isn't always enough, especially to a single mother with two or three children who isn't able to work or simply can't afford child care long enough to find a job. Everybody worries about how they are going to pay their doctors, bills, and most importantly, food for the children. I may not have the information to help pay bills or your doctor's bills, but I do have information on how to get help with groceries. It's called Angel Food Ministries.

This is a non-profit organization that has helped over 500,000 families afford food since February 1994. Angel Food works with community organizations and churches in over 32 states to help ease the cost of groceries for people who need it. What happens is they give a menu for each month containing enough items to fill up a medium sized box. Each menu is different each month, and everything on the menu you can get for just around $25 plus tax in some states. They also have a "special" for every month. If you buy the menu you can choose a "special" that contains meat, such as steaks, pork, and chicken for just $18. This quantity can feed just one person for about a month and a family of 3 for about two or three weeks. The menus consist of frozen vegetables, chicken breasts, frozen meats, fruit, eggs, canned goods, and even desserts! These items are of the same quality that you would see in a grocery store. You're probably thinking you have to qualify or fill out lengthy applications, well, you don't, and there's no limit to the number of units or specialty boxes you can buy.

Now you're wondering where to go to get it and how to pay for it. More than likely a local church will host this program and you will have to call or make a trip to the church to order your unit and then pay by check, cash, or food stamps. The host will then call in the order to the main office in Monroe, Georgia and within several more days, Angel Food will deliver the orders on a predetermined date for you to pick them up. Most host sites don't deliver like a pizza shop does. You are urged to be there on Distribution Day to pick up your order with your own boxes or baskets to fill up. Distribution Day is when volunteers and people of the church or host site come together to set up, clean, fill people's boxes and baskets, help the elderly, and share the joy of helping others when they truly need it the most.

For the volunteers, this is a long day, for families in need, this is a short but well appreciated trip, and perhaps the best day of the month for both parties. While the joy of giving is exciting, the excitement of getting help is overwhelming. Help spread the word to people you know that could use some help. Ask if your church would be willing to participate if they aren't already. To know more you can check out the supporting sites.

you shouldn't judge people, i am a single mother of 3, and i am staying at a motel to pay for my room rent, i am in desprate need of some assistance, i have no income coming in, and yes i do get to use the internet only because they have one in the office here at the motel. There are many nights that i have to go to bed hungry cause i only have enough to feed my children. Times are hard, but i do anything that i can to make the best of the situation i am in.

I don't think Breakaway was considering that some people work from home and must have the Internet. I'm one of those people, and I struggle from week to week. I don't have the Internet for chatting and playing games. It's my livelihood, and without it I couldn't make money. I think this is a fantastic article, and I was wondering about this program. I'll make it a point to place my order for the food this month. I was wondering if it was really worth it. You did a nice job on this. Thank you!

Many people can get internet for free at the library or in other locations, a family members home or at school. Judge not lest ye be judged

I can vouch for this program as well and have seen it help numerous people. Its truly a blessing

In responce to "Breakaway" You need to be careful about judging so quickly. Some people work from home and are still needy. Some are students studying by distance so that one day they'll be able to live an ok finacially free life, like me. My husband works two jobs from 4am to 6pm (when he actually gets off on time). We have a two year old and my take home pay from my old job wouldn't cover daycare expences. So, I'm working on my BA and internet is a nessecity. Hopefully one day I'll be able to pay my husband back by putting him through school. But until then we live pay check to pay check. No credit cards. One car. No cable. And sometimes no food for us, so that our baby can eat. It's a sucky life and you should watch out for what you say, it may be the one thing someone takes with them for the rest of their life.

This is a very good program, and there's no need to be needy to participate in it.

No offense, but if someone is online reading this and is paying for internet, then they should be using that money for groceries, especially if they have kids... thanks for the awareness of the program.

This article provides great information. I wish more people would take advantage. I find the food to be very good.
