Need a Reason to Be Thankful? Let Me Help You

Some Thoughts for Thanksgiving

Pattie Byrd
With unemployment much higher than we're used to and the economy sliding along the bottom like an ole mud cat in the Mississippi, some of us may be having trouble remembering why we should be thankful this Thanksgiving. Allow me to give you a little assistance.

First of all, be thankful for your healthy kids who constantly give you gray hair and wrinkles. Every time you get that call late at night that they've been in an accident and your beloved car will never be the same, be thankful that they stand before you with nothing but a few bruises and valuable lessons learned.

Next, welcome that parent into your house who will criticize your spouse and remind you everything you've done wrong in your life, and do it very loudly while everyone is seated around the table. Be thankful that your parent doesn't suffer the affliction of dementia or Alzheimer's and still can remember your name. Be especially grateful if their health enables them to be independent and vital up to this point.

Be thankful that we live in a country where people are generous to those less fortunate and try to help those around them to have food to eat this Thanksgiving. Take a minute and consider all those many different organizations filled with volunteers who work diligently to help provide some of that same food overflowing on your dining table.

And while you're at it, take another minute to be thankful that you live in a country that is concerned enough about its citizens that it recruits people to protect and preserve your freedom and safety. Remember if just for a second those serving in the armed services who feel such a dedication to serve that they're willing to be away from those they love during the holiday season.

And last but not least, be thankful that you live in a country that allows you the freedom to complain about it, have a say in what happens and defends your right to do so. And remember that there are many around the globe who would change places with you at this very moment, even if it risked their own safety.

As we gather with family and friends, may we always be truly thankful. Happy Thanksgiving.

I'll ponder on paragraph 3. Sometimes it just gets too much to bear. Everything else I agree with.

The easiest thing to be thankful for is simply that we are here to enjoy the experience of being here. HUGS and Happy Thanksgiving!
