Need Some Support for Weight Loss? - Find it Online

Kate Gosser
Sparkpeople is an online company dedicated to help people reach their goals of weight loss and lead healthy lifestyles. The site is completely free of charge, based on your local community and easy to access. Each individual person can set their own attainable goals based on fitness, leadership, and health. This company has been around for five years, since 2001, and is one of the fastest growing online brands in weight loss and healthy living. The company has members from all over the United States and the world, each plan designed especially for the individual person. BabyFit, the first and only online healthy pregnancy planner, is owned by the makers of Sparkpeople. Both programs rely on many doctors, trainers, dieticians, and other fitness experts to come up with the personalized plans for people.

Once a member joins the site, they can set their own goals of either weight loss or weight gain. After setting those, Sparkpeople puts in place the number of calories that should be eaten daily as well as the amount of exercise that should be done weekly. Both can be tracked with the food tracker and the exercise tracker. On the days the member should do strength training, Sparkpeople gives them a list of exercises to do along with a video and description of how to do it. When it comes to food, the member can follow his or her own diet and recording what they ate or they can follow a specific meal plan given to them from Sparkpeople. Recipes can also be found on the website with a breakdown of calories, fats, and other amounts of nutrients in the dish.

But Sparkpeople is not to be done completely alone! There are message boards to write on, groups to join, and friends to make. Each member has their own 'Sparkpage' where they can write about themselves, blog in a journal, link to their friends on the website, save their favorite articles or discussions, and leave or read comments. The amount of support is overwhelming, as everyone is in this together to meet a mostly common goal: to live healthy.

If none of this convinces you, in 2006, Sparkpeople was voted "Best Health Site" in Business Week's Best of the Web.

  • The site is absolutely 100% free.
  • They offer meal plans, calorie counters, and an exercise program.
  • Voted Best Health Site in 2006.
The company really first started back in 1982, when founder Chris Downie was just 12 years old. It was then he resolved to create the "ultimate fitness program" for himself after being the shyest kid in the class.
