Need Work? Job Openings at Discount Retailers Are on the Rise

Retailers that Are Hiring Despite a Sluggish Economy

C. Jeanne Heida
Are you out of work? It seems that everywhere you look this days, businesses and retailers are cutting back staff or closing their doors for good, contributing to that growing pool of unemployed. Fortunately for job seekers, discount franchises and dollar stores continue to perform as well as ever.

Dollar stores are an interesting niche industry, and not terribly unlike the Five-and-Dimes of our childhood. Most of the merchandise comes from China and is almost half the size of what we're accustomed to seeing at our favorite retailers, but there no arguing that the price is right. When times are good, dollar store inventory can be tough to push out the door. But when people can no longer afford luxury goods and high priced food, they hit Dollar Tree and other discount retailers as a way to stretch their budgets. It should come as no surprise then why stores that specialize in thrifty bargains are currently hiring.

If you are unemployed, it's worth turning your eye to discount stores for employment opportunities. Dollar Tree and Family Dollar are two popular dollar store franchises that are currently hiring:
... The Dollar Tree franchise of discount retailers has nearly 1300 job opening in the areas of management, service clerks, and warehouse workers. Their website can be located here.
... Family Dollar is also hiring, and currently has posting for 371 management and warehouse positions. That site can be found at familydollar.taleo.net. Sales clerk positions aren't posted on this site. To locate those, it will be necessary to visit the stores in your area.

And what about other discount retailers? If the store has the words "Dollar", "Discount", "Thrift" or "Bargain" in the name, the odds are good that they are looking for employees as well. Places to check for jobs should include thrift stores, second hand stores, bakery thrifts, and discount grocery stores. A random sampling in my community turned up a number of these stores with a "Help Wanted" sign in the window.

Economists are predicting that the current recession may last another two years, which means that business will continue to be brisk at dollar stores and other discount stores. For a job seeker who is currently unemployed or underemployed, a dollar store job may be one of the most stable employment opportunities available.
