Needing a Break? Travel to This Part of South Eastern Ohio

Trust Me - You Need a "Bit of Country"

Ricky Doan
With my 5th anniversary being this past week-end, I wanted to take my wife away some where yet not break my budget. Being "simple" folk as we are, we really enjoy cabins, country scenery and the like. Cell phones are a hassell with us, as they ring continually and city traffic and noise sometimes are more than this country boy can bear. Friend, if this sounds like you then let me introduce you to a wonderful place.

Hocking Hills.

No I don't have something stuck in my throat...that really is the name of it. Located about 35 miles south of Columbus Ohio you will find a beautiful place full of pine forest, sheer cliffs and beautiful waterfalls. To say life is simple would be an extreme understatement! As the owner of "Etta's general store and lunchbox cafe" told me, no one there seems to have an agenda. (As a side note, this general store has over 500 lunch boxes on display and the owner can age you by what you carried.) SCARY! :-)

Getting away from the rest of the world was very easy. Not only did our cell phones not ring, they didn't even work. I'm talking not even the clock on the front worked. Nothing. It was wonderful!!

We rented a cabin from a wonderful couple name Bit Of Country. Hand crafted cabins, trees literally cut down, milled and assembled by the owner himself, and they were beautiful. They have two cabins available, the "Three oaks" and the "Four oaks" respectively. They also have a Bed & Breakfast available in their home on site. The cabins and house sit up on a tall hill side with a beautiful view all directions. "Trilling" toads serenade you in the night air, while blue jays, and other birds fill the morning with a beautiful melody. The peace I found walking the mowed trails through the meadow was amazing!

If hiking is your bag, then a few miles back up the road leads you to all the trails of hocking hills state park. You can hike a few simple trails or you can really get your cardio work out with some of the more intense, way up and way down trails. Old Mans Cave, the Rock House, and Ash Cave are just a few of the natural attractions you can visit, all free of charge.

Travelling Hwy 56 out of London Ohio was a beautiful trip down with country views and only a couple small towns the whole way. If you are a biker, I would definitely recommend this route as traffic was low and the roads smooth.

So, if you need time away from the real world, this is definitely the place for you. Take the family, or just take that special someone. Either way, it will be a time to remember.

God bless, and happy traveling.
