Needles and Thread

Adam Kamerer
Our lies are violent poetry,
And I'm tired of sewing promises
Onto your lips with them.
I'd rather sew your eyes shut instead,
So they won't stare out at me
And beg me for things
You know that I can't give.
While I'm at it,
I'd stitch your hands to your thighs,
So you can't open them to me,
And ask me to come to you.
I know you'll just strike me
If I get too close.
I know you'll just wound me
If I get too close.
So better to suture shut those doors,
And leave you on the inside
Of the creature you want to be.
I won't sew shut your ears;
There's no need:
You've done that by yourself,
So you can hum la-dee-dah,
And hear only the words you
Think I'm saying to you,
And not the things you know
Are really rolling off my tongue.
I want you to know,
That I plan to sincerely hope
That these tight stitches
Leave you with no scars.
