Neenah Schools Tightening Schools Safety

The Neenah school district approved the an 85,000 dollar security upgrade Tuesday, confirming a long awaited step towards safer schools. The work will begin in the next thirty days and be completed by the end of this school year. Board member Larry Lewis said Neenah's security lags behind other school districts he has visited in Wisconsin.

After the project is finished visitors will have to announce their identity and purpose by intercom before the main office will electronically unlock the door. The front entry of each elementary school will be equipped with an audio and video intercom and remote-control door lock system. Visitors will have to be cleared by office staff before they are allowed inside. They will have to also pass by the main office before entering the building, and cameras will be watching every step they make.

"Cameras don't stop crime," Tom Hanby said. "They just capture a bad event when it happens. It looks to be a whole lot of fluff and stuff."

Cameras not only work to capture a crime in progress it also helps in preventing it by telling the committee that they are being watched. After the cameras are installed the school will have total control of who enters the building and why they are. Right now Neenah schools have no means of knowing who is inside and what their purpose is. Visitors to Neenah schools currently can enter the building unseen by office staff. The security upgrade will install a new entry that leads directly to the main office. All other exterior doors will be locked during the day.

To many Neenah residents this is a great improvement and sets many parents minds at ease. With all the school violence that has happened lately, and with no signs of stopping, this makes students feel safer as well.

Neenah also hopes that other Wisconsin school districts follow example and set up better security in their schools. No schools are safe from intruders, or violence. Neenah high school will also experience security upgrades as well.

Money for the improvements will be drawn from $160,000 that was budgeted for maintenance of the east parking lot at Neenah Elementary.
