First, it's important to be familiar with the different types of cholesterol medications, so that you can decide which is best for you. Fibric acids, statins, and nicotonic acids are some of the most popular forms of cholesterol medications, and statins are perhaps the most popular. Medications like Lipitor are statins, and these are the types of medicines that are advertised most commonly online and in television commercials. It has been said that statins can cause heart attacks, but further research has proven that this is not true. Statins have no effect on the pressure that is placed on the heart; however, diet can still contribute to heart attacks, even if cholesterol medication is being taken. However, medicines like Lipitor can cause neuromuscular degeneration, which means that you could lose muscle coordination and strength after taking the medication for some time. The damage to the nervous system can also cause slurred speech, severe muscle pain, and imbalance when standing for long periods of time. These effects can be permanent and the damage could be similar to a stroke, so detecting these signs early and talking to your doctor about reversing the damage as soon as possible is the best way to restore your health.
Other cholesterol medicines, such as those with niacin, do not have side effects that are as severe as statins, but you could still experience night sweats, migraines, or pigmentation of the skin. If you are taking fibric acid medications for cholesterol (most natural or alternative medications are based on fibric acid), these medicines can give you an upset stomach, and cause inflammation in the muscles and liver. Nicotonic acids can also cause upset stomach, heartburn, hot flashes, gout, and muscle weakness and soreness. Many times, people attribute these symptoms to something they've eaten, stress, or other illnesses, but if you've been taking medication to lower your cholesterol, it is important to pay special attention to the way that your body is feeling after a few weeks so that you can tell whether or not the sickness or discomfort you're feeling is due to your medication.
One of the best things to do to keep your cholesterol at a healthy level is to take ample amounts of vitamin C per day, since this will help to renew your cells. It is also important to keep in mind that some cholesterol is "good"--you need a substantial amount of cholesterol in the body so that your cell membranes can be strengthened and renewed, and phospholipids can be generated in the body. Your cells and tissue are constantly being repaired when your body creates new cells, and when your body is not able to accomplish this on a regular basis, your muscle tissue could be damaged severely.
Keeping your diet extremely healthy and balanced is one of the most ideal ways to make sure that you don't have to continue to take cholesterol medicines. If you are already taking medication, or have experienced high levels of cholesterol due to other medications, be sure to schedule a detailed consultation with your doctor to find out the healthiest alternatives for you.
