Harris told Dave that he and Burtka were dressing their babies up for different holidays every month so that they could create a calendar featuring all the cute photos. It's a really fun idea for families with young children, whether the photos are used to create a calendar, scrapbook, photo album, or other memento. So for those who want to dress up their kids and take pictures every month like Neil Patrick Harris, here are a few ideas for each month of the year:
January
For this month, kids could dress in their Sunday best, wear "Happy New Year" party hats, and hold plastic champagne glasses full of apple juice (babies would have to forgo the juice) or noisemakers.
February
Have the kids create giant hearts out of pink or red posterboard and use white paint to write "Happy Valentine's Day" on each of them in really big letters (you could also glue white lace or a ruffle around the hearts to make them even more festive). Then just have your children dress in red or pink and hold the hearts. If you want to get really creative, you could also have a child dress like cupid with angel wings and a toy bow and arrow.
March
For St. Patrick's day, have the kids wear green and hold giant shamrocks cut out of construction paper. You could also purchase plastic leprechaun hats and a plastic black pot to serve as their pot o' gold.
April
Dress the kids in spring colors and have them pose with Easter baskets full of eggs for this month. You could wait until your Easter egg hunt on the actual holiday to take photos, or have the kids pose with the Easter bunny at the local mall. But if there aren't any giant fluffy bunnies around to take photos with, it would also be cute to take a page from Neil Patrick Harris and get the kids some fluffy bunny ears of their own.
May
For Cinco de Mayo, buy the kids some festive maracas, sombreros, and colorful ponchos or serapes.
June
Celebrate the first day of summer with swimwear and beach gear like beach balls, plastic pails and shovels, and beach towels. If you live near a beach or have a sandbox, you might also want to build a sandcastle to pose with.
July
For the Fourth of July, have the kids dress in red, white, and blue and hold small American flags. On the actual holiday, you could have them pose with a local fireworks display going on in the background, or in front of the grill at your barbeque. The kids could also hold sparklers, or make fake ones using wooden sticks with short, shiny streamers or tinsel glued or taped on the ends. For another fun craft project, have them use red, white, and blue construction paper and empty paper towel rolls to make fake rocket-shaped fireworks to hold.
August
When the kids go back to school, take a photo of them on their first day with books, backpacks, and apples for their teachers (of course they don't have to actually take the apples with them if their too embarrassed).
September
In honor of Labor Day, have your kids dress up like what they want to be when they grow up, whether it's a fireman, doctor, or princess.
October
Of course this month is easy since you'll already be buying Halloween costumes for the kids. However, you can get creative with the background by having them pose with a creatively-carved jack-o-lantern, in front of your local haunted house, or in a well-decorated yard. And if you want to be extra-spooky, take the photo at your local cemetery.
November
For Thanksgiving you could have kids dress like pilgrims and Native Americans and stand in front of your dinner table on the holiday, or you could have them pose with a cornucopia full of gourds, pumpkin, and corn. An area where there are lots of trees with colorful fall leaves would also make a beautiful backdrop.
December
And of course you've got to have the kids pose with Santa Claus. For those that aren't a fan of the jolly man, have them pose with a snowy creation or in front of a pretty local Christmas lights display. Kids might also have fun dressing like elves or the big man themselves.
So whether you use the photos for a calendar or put them in a photo album as a keepsake, legen -- wait for it -- daddy Neil Patrick Harris' fun idea is a great way to celebrate your family every month.
