Nelly!

A Little Brown Pony

Charles Melius
We once had a pony called "Nelly".
Who loved to eat filled donuts jelly
When out for a ride, 'Ole Bob by her side
What fun cause they each kind of smelly!

Her coat of a bright auburn hue
So shiny and sleek in the dew
Of morning first light, A beautiful site
Yet her Winter coat more like steel wool.

Each afternoon after their play
The curry comb on her he'd lay
No movement made her, He combed out the burrs
From their run in the field grown of hay.

Yet never she'd let me too near her
One wouldn't believe such a terror
This docile small horse, Would havoc of course
I'd leave and she'd think herself clever.

Sweet times this old memory from past
So long ago I cannot ask
Was all like I said, Or different instead
For my memory not clear of this task.
