Nelson: A Glam Metal Band

Janis I. Monroe
Matthew Gray Nelson and Gunner Eric Nelson were born on September 20, 1967. They are twin brothers who founded the band Nelson. The twins are sons of Ricky Nelson. They had a number one hit in the United States with "(Can't Live Without Your) Love and Affection". This happened during the week of September 29, 1990.

The Nelsons are listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the only family to reach number one record status in three successive generations. The first generation would be with grandparents Ozzie and Harriet Nelson.

After 1995, the band split with Geffen Records record label. However, they have continued to produce and release albums independently under their own label Stone Canyon Records. Unfortunately, they have yet to revisit the level of success they had in 1990.

Mathew and Gunner were always involved in music. They joined a band called Strange Agents in the 1980's. Later in the decade, they started their band and that is when they signed on with Geffen Records. When "(Can't Live Without You) Love and Affection" debuted at number one, they went on tour to support the song.

After the tour, the band began recording their next project call Imaginator. Yet, when they played the album for Geffen, the record company considered it too heavy. Geffen threatened the band that it would drop them from the label if they didn't produce another record more to their tastes.

It took the band another year to produce an album Geffen liked and it was released in 1995. The album was titled "Because They Can". The pop music scene went through a dramatic changed in the five years following After the Rain. Geffen chose not to promote Nelson's new album (Imaginator) and dropped Nelson from their label. The brothers created their own recording studio and released Imaginator in 1996. Even though they haven't been able to reach the same level of success with their new record as with their first, the band has been a consistent seller in Japan. They released four other albums including a tribute to their father.

During the spring of 2008, Nelson became the featured band on the Royal Caribbean Ship Circuit, performing on Brilliance of the Seas among other ships. They also performed for the sixth consecutive year in Epcot's Flower Power Concert series as a part of the annual International Flower and Garden Festival.

The band signed a contract in 2009, with Frontiers Records with a new studio album titled Lightening Strikes Twice which is planned for release later in 2009. There are other albums scheduled to be released by the Italian label, such as a live album and a CD including the original demos from After the Rain writing sessions.
