Nerds VS. Major Geeks: An Anti-Social Classification System

William Meeks
We live a persecuted life, we geeks. People constantly get us confused with other, lesser social classes. This isn't their fault. It's a problem born of ignorance of past generations, or a lack of proper education. "Saved by the Bell" probably didn't help much either. Most people use a very broad definition. Geeks are tiring of this, and want an image change.

Being a geek isn't a bad thing at all. Most times when people react badly to being called a geek they think they are being referred to as either a nerd, dork, or dweeb. Most don't register the subtle distinction.

A dork is a person of weak intellect, social skills, and hygiene. The nearest fictional equivalent is Napoleon Dynamite. Dorks generally hang out in small groups of 2-3 other dorks. They don't excel in school but can play hours playing role-playing games with their closest friends. A dork generally evolves into one of the two higher classes.

Dweebs are people of standard intelligence but with low social skills. They tend to keep to themselves, but are really quite interesting. With dedication dweebs can become a full-fledged geek. Dweebs are easily confused with nerds, but Dweebs are more likely to start up a conversation. Think Anthony Michael Hall in The Breakfast Club, not Sixteen Candles. The character was definitely a nerd.

Nerds have an exceptional mind, passable hygiene, but no social skills whatsoever. Nerds do hang out with non-nerds, but it is generally a subservient relationship in which the nerd performs some academic or intellectual tasks in exchange for protection or status. Nerd characters often appear in the background of movies and TV shows, usually in groups. Steve Urkel was a popular fictional nerd in the early nineties.

The highest of all the classes is the fabled and fashionable geek. A geek is a man of exceptional intellect, broad and developed interests and hobbies, great personal hygiene, and amazing social skills. Geeks can often be confused with "norms" until their true geekitude breaks through in a game of Trivial Pursuit. Geeks are the only class with a strong shot at landing a girlfriend. Generally shunned in High School Geeks are hot commodities among women in their mid and late twenties.

Many celebrities are geeks. Jack Black is an example of a dork who converted to geekdom. Zach Braff, Jason Schwartzman, and Topher Grace are all natural-born geeks. Tarintino upgraded from nerd to geek.

While it's understandable that there would be some confusion in these common terms, that does not excuse continued ignorance. The sooner people understand the difference between these classes the sooner geeks will stop being marginalized.

Yes! Finally someone who understands the different classes of outcasts. Great Article! I hate it so much when even my intelligent friends say geeks are the ones with no social life and the nerds the ones with social lifes. I guess people overlook things like this. I've known the variatian of outcasts since i was really young and to hear people misinterpret these categories just annoys me so much. I'm proud to call myself a geek and i know i was a nerd back in middle school. I'm just glad to be where i stand today; smart, genuinely nice, funny, good at dancing, socially awesome, and varied in interests.

I'm sorry about the other comments in wich people missunderstood your intention and your work. It's a really good job you've done in here, is a shame that common people never understands the right point. PS, I think someone that says your term is wrong cause I do this, is not smart enough to know that not everyone is exactly like that(the 90% rule). I would like to spread your word in spanish if you give me your permission. Ciao.

I think this holds a lot of truth to it. But, it in some cases, 1 term does not describe an individual. See, in my case, I'm a cross between these. I'm in no way a geek. I have excellent hygiene, average/above-average intelligence, and standard social skills. I play online games and am quite the movie buff, while maintaining a private life. So these terms are correct, but flawed. I think a title for me would be glorified Dork-Dweeb. lol

even If everything would be as you say there apparently evolves a question: why Geeks are marginalized? they have intelligence and social skills, but they are still out of normal social context, somehow they just can't get allong with everyone else... I think it doesnt matter whether u are geek or nerd you still don't have developed social skills. Human development requires not only books study, in fact learning social skills is much harder then u can imagine.. you need frequent intercourse..

First off, nice caps. They REALLY get your point across, NOT! Your rant made about as much sense as Mush Mouth does on his average day. We know, anything that requires too much thought on your end gets your panties in knot. Just continue with your traditional approach of lumping everyone into one category when dealing with nerds, geeks, dweebs, dorks etc ... At least that way you betray your idiocy outright!

    All hail the troll!

  • WILLIAM GET A LIFE 8/27/2008

YEA GET A LIFE YOU MORON YOU DONT HAVE TO BE THAT SPECIFIC WHEN U CAL LSOMEONE A NERD, I BET UR A FKEN NERD YOURSELF AND U JUST WANNA KNOW WHAT IS A NERD CAUSE YOU CALLED THAT SO MANY TIMES AND U WANT TO KNOW WHAT AN ERD MEANS JUST SO YOU COULD LEARN HOW NOT TO BE A NERD YOU'RE A FAILURE, YOU WANT TO KNOW HOW OT NOT BE A NERD ( OR IN UR CASE, DORK / GEEK/ AND ALL THOSE OTHER BULLSHIT NAMES IWTH MINUTE DIFFERENCES??? WELL HER'S HOW, ITS CALLED STANDING UP FOR UR SELF, ITS AS SIMPLE AS THAT, BUT NERDS/ GEEKS OR W/E CAN'T SEE THAT CAUSE THEY WANT TO DO IT THE HARD JUST SO PPL COULD SEE THEM AS "INTELLIGENT"? TO ITS MORE LIKE BEING UNECCESSARY
