The permanent placement of a Netflix button on remote controls is sure to attract additional subscribers. The convenience of hitting the Netflix button to get programming is an alluring convenience.
Forbes reports there are currently over 16 million Netflix subscribers. Their stock prices are soaring and they are definitely a part of the modern viewer experience.
Netflix will have a button "situated prominently" on remote controls for television remotes form Sony, Sharp and Toshiba. The button will appear on remote controls for Roku, Boxee and Iomega set-top boxes. Some blu-ray players will have the button including Haier, Sharp, Samsung, Panasonic, Toshiba, Sony, Memorex and Best Buy's in house brand Dynex.
According to PC World, 66 percent of Netflix users streamed Netflix video for 15 minutes or more during the third quarter of 2010. During peak evening hours, streaming accounts account for about 20 percent of US broadband activity.
With a noticeable red Netflix button added to remote controls, it seems streaming video online is likely to become even more popular. This may also leave room for other services looking for a valuable space on remote controls.
Much like the face of television, it seems remote controls are destined to change.
