Netflix Instant Best New Movies for October 2010

Anne Wright
The best new movies on Netflix instant for October 2010 include at least two monster movies for Halloween. This is a quick summary of 10 of the top rated new films on Netflix streaming.

Big Night: The food deserves top billing, but it's also a warm story of 2 brothers (Stanley Tucci and Tony Shalhoub) struggling to save their Italian restaurant from going bankrupt. Isabella Rossellini and Minnie Driver also star. This new Netflix instant film got 3.7 stars.

The Secret of Kells: This Oscar nominated animated film is inspired by the famous illuminated manuscript, the Book of Kells. Kids will be inspired by twelve-year old Brendan fighting monsters and his own fears while everyone will be dazzled by the artistry and glorious color. Viewers give it 3.9 stars.

The Fabulous Baker Boys: It's easy to make fun of lounge singers but this trio (Beau and Jeff Bridges, Michelle Pfeiffer) restores their humanity. This top rated movie got 3.3 stars.

Gods and Monsters: Film director James Whale (Ian McKellen) seems unbearable until you hear a line from his most famous film, Frankenstein. Like it says, the monster is lonely and needs a friend. It gets 3.6 stars.

The Cove: This Oscar winning documentary on dolphin slaughter got 4.2 stars. If only it would shut down SeaWorld.

Valmont: It's another fine film based on the novel Dangerous Liaisons. Directors Milos Forman and Stephen Frears both did great jobs, but Forman's Valmont seems to appeal more to people who can't stand actors over 40 having sex. This new Netflix streaming movie got 3.4 stars.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind: It bored me but viewers give this top rated movie 4 stars, and Francois Truffaut liked it enough to play a scientist with Richard Dreyfuss starring as the cable guy.

Pretty Baby: Twelve year old Brooke Shields soared to fame as a New Orleans child prostitute in director Louis Malle's disturbing but well done drama. Susan Sarandon and Keith Carradine also star. It got 3.1 stars at Netflix.

The Decameron: This is no Hollywood production and uses amateur players, but Giovanni Boccaccio's 14th century stories are just as compelling now. It got 3.2 stars.

Algiers: You can love Pepe le Moko and this American remake with Charles Boyer as the master criminal of the Casbah. This new Netflix streaming movie got 3.1 stars.

These new Netflix instant movies for October 2010 are all worth taking a look.

Big Night was a big snooze for me, but Pasolini's Decameron (along with his Canterbury Tales and Arabian Nights) is a wild, funny, sexy intoxicating bit of joy.
