Hannah and Her Sisters (1986): This story of 3 Manhattan sisters is familiar Woody Allen territory but it's got 3 Oscars and 2 Thanksgiving dinners. This new Netflix instant film got 3.5 stars.
The Girl on the Bridge (1999): An aging knife thrower and his suicidal assistant push their luck in Patrice Leconte's playful comedy. Viewers give it 3.6 stars.
The Bells of St. Mary's (1945): Father O'Malley and Sister Benedict (Bing Crosby, Ingrid Bergman) bicker over how to run St Mary's Academy. It's delightful and deep and not at all corny. This top rated movie got 3.7 stars.
A Canterbury Tale (1949): Compared to Chaucer's ribaldry, these Michael Powell tales get a G rating and are set 600 years later in WWII with British and American pilgrims. The reflections on blessings and impermanence are true to the original and perfect for Thanksgiving. It gets 3.3 stars.
The Quiet American (2002): This love triangle and murder set in 1950s Vietnam offers a Graham Greene plot and a Michael Caine performance so it's no wonder it gets 3.5 stars.
Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus (2009): Terry Gilliam (Monty Python) directs Heath Ledger's final appearance. It's a little convoluted but visually impressive as a magician makes a deal with the devil. This new Netflix streaming movie got 3.3 stars.
Hour of the Wolf (1968): This Ingmar Bergman horror movie is a little like a Swedish Shining as a husband plays with imaginary friends and descends into madness. It gets 3.6 stars.
My Son, My Son What Have Ye Done (2009): Sophocles, matricide, and ostriches have never been so funny so ignore the 2.7 rating at Netflix for this Werner Herzog film. Based on a true story, a man kills his mother after rehearsing for Electra.
Marathon Man (1976): I found it unpleasant but this classic thriller has a strong cast (Dustin Hoffman, Laurence Olivier, Roy Scheider) and 3.7 stars at Netflix.
Mid-August Lunch: An Italian man who lives with his mother winds up caring for several more old women when everyone leaves on holiday. It's like The Golden Girl's Sophia quadrupled but much more authentic. This new Netflix streaming movie got 3.3 stars.
These new Netflix instant movies for November 2010 should make for a happy Thanksgiving.

Post a Commenthmmmm....good list, I liked Heath's last movie (Imaginarium) and originally only watched it because of Johnny Depp being a part of it (tho' a very small part), as he and Colin stepped in to fill the place of Heath to finish the movie after he passed away and gave all their pay and proceeds they made to Heath's daughter...isn't that the coolest?
Hour of the Wolf - great to have a reminder of the great Ingmar Bergman!
Great list - will have to order many of them!
The Bells of St. Marys still brings a tear to my eye:)
