Netflix Vs. Redbox DVD Rental

Greg Seltz
It's amazing how only a couple years ago I found myself driving to Blockbuster to satisfy my movie craze, and today I simply check my mailbox. Or if I prefer, I can drive to the nearest market and rent the latest new release for a buck o'eight. The savings are obvious, and I sense that movie rental chains are taking a significant loss due to these two more cost efficient methods. Which is more convenient for you, Netflix or Redbox?

At Blockbuster, I was paying $4.99 for new releases and $1.99 for old. If you enjoy re-watching the classics as much as I do, you may as well buy them at this rental price. Redbox is the dollar menu compared to Blockbuster. You choose your selection, pay via credit card, the movies are released, and still have time to get popcorn at the nearest supermarket. The disadvantage to Redbox is that the selection is minimal, and all rentals must be returned by the next evening. The advantage, they can be returned to any Redbox kiosk in the state! How convenient......

3 DVD's out at-a-time for only $16.99 a month is only one of the many subscription plans Netflix offers. This means that each time a DVD is returned, another from your queue is released and en-route. Transit times are comfortable enough; if a DVD is in the mail on Monday, you should see the replacement on Wednesday. Did I mention that postage is free! This is a great option if you consider yourself a movie buff. You can enjoy a movie each night without travelling farther than your mailbox. A few of the classics can even be streamed on your computer. The customer service is also very helpful if one of the DVD's do not work or are damaged; a replacement will be shipped within 24 hours.

Of the two; if I was to Netflix 6 movies a week at the $16.99 plan, I would total 24 monthly. If I was to Redbox 24 movies a month, it would cost me $25.92. Once again, the savings are obvious. I prefer to stick with Netflix regardless of the savings due to the amount of movies in their library. Not once have I not been able to find a movie; whether it be new release, classic 60's films, foreign, or television series (the exception is adult films). Another perk to Netflix is that there are no late fees! Of course, your cost per rental ratio increases if you are not watching through them quick enough. If you only watch a handful of films per month, you may be better off sticking to Redbox or even Blockbuster. But I think I can guarantee that Netflix is the most convenient source for DVD rentals if you're an avid film buff.
