If you have never visited PalTalk, you might be in for a surprise. It's the largest video chat room on the Internet with an estimated 4 million users from around the world. The software is free and so is the networking.

Right now, my profile shows there are 80,168 members in 5,221 rooms. This a lot of free networking that is only limited by my use of the rooms. Currently, I'm listening to drums in a music room while I write this article. I just asked the DJ and he said it's the Shadows, an unknown group in England.

I switched to another room now. A man from the Netherlands is playing blues and it's Gary Moore from Ireland. I've heard pre-release music, live music and comedy acts. I listened to a live performance from a wine-tasting event one evening. All of this is free networking and I can always turn it into file-sharing, business contacts or social contacts.

Start your own chat room or visit others for networking free. I have a chat room and I'm an administrator in 3 chat rooms. Rooms are open to the public or locked.

Networking Free: Chat Room Caution

1) As far as the profile, leave it blank and use a nickname. I have a non-gender nickname and photo so my gender is private.

2) Never answer an Instant Message unless you know who sent it. Set your profile so you don't receive messages unless it's from someone on your Pal list.

3) There are some people who disrupt rooms. They are promptly blocked or bounced by the room administrators. PalTalk Administration watches the subscribers and if somebody gets bounced too often, they lose their privilege of membership.

4) I only visit G-rated rooms. If I like a room, I visit it frequently to get to know the people and this is when file-sharing starts. I never have any problems with the people who send files and it's legal, networking free.

Networking Free: Chat Room Etiquette

When you enter a chat room, introduce yourself in text and let them know if you're there just to listen to music while you work. Anyone can enter in on text conversations. To speak on the microphone, raise your hand. The speaker will tell you when it's your turn to speak.
