The energy of emotions are so powerful that they can affect one's health, function, and thoughts. Even our language has terms related to the power of emotions and their physiological changes that they induce. People may have a "feeling in their gut", have "butterflies in their stomach", feel "upset in their stomach", have a "chip on their shoulder", or be "boiling over" to where they are ready to "flip their top". These expressions describe the mechanism of physiological changes that occur when emotions are being felt by the body. This equates to the ability for emotions to affect one's overall health.
Emotions are meant to flow - just like water and blood. Emotions should be felt and then should be allowed to move on. When emotions stop flowing, problems arise that will eventually manifest themselves in physical symptoms. When blood stops flowing, it clots. When water stops flowing, it stagnates. Emotions are meant to flow! Emotions that are incongruent with an individual will emit their energy into surrounding tissues and lead to a physical problem via changes in physiology.
Principles of Chinese Medicine have demonstrated that emotions are actually stored in various organs of the body. For example, anger and resentment are stored in the liver and gallbladder; paralyzed will and fear are stored in the kidney and bladder. As negative emotions are stored within these organs, the physiological effects accumulate and can cause future health conditions.
Many emotions are responded to unconsciously or subconsciously. Pavlov experimented with the concept of psychological programming by association - he would ring a bell and then feed dogs food. Before long, the dogs would salivate to the sound of any bell as their brains had associated bells with expecting food. Similarly, many responses to emotions can be programmed associations learned during childhood experiences, inherited through habits of family members, or an involuntary response.
When emotions get blocked up or impeded from flowing in the body, it is imperative to get them moving again; doing so terminates the long-term ill effects by the changes in physiology taking place. Many times, different experiences or time will dislodge a "stuck" emotion, but most often some assistance is necessary. Utilizing a therapy called Neuro Emotional Technique, emotions can effectively be dislodged from creating physiological problems or physical complaints. The therapy is painless and easy. The practitioner accesses the emotion database through muscle testing and continues to test to find a "snapshot" of the event of the emotion that the body is incongruent with. Once the "snapshot" is found, the individual contacts the points involved with the storage of the emotion in the body while the practitioner stimulates various acupressure points. This technique effectively releases the emotion and overrides the encompassing physiological effects.
