Nevaeh Buchanan is Missing: Are Police Closing in on a Solution?

Leads Decrease, a Reward is Offered, and Police Begin Minimal Press Conferences

There is now a $20,000 reward being offered by the Task Force searching for Nevaeh Buchanan for information leading to the whereabouts of the missing 5-year-old girl. Authorities revealed Wednesday, according to ToledoOnTheMove.com, that tips have dwindled, just a day after Monroe County officials held a very non-revealing press conference.

Monroe County Sheriff Tilman Crutchfield, speaking Tuesday at the daily press conference for missing Nevaeh Buchanan, said, "I'm not commenting on who is and who isn't a person of interest... I'm not going to comment on any specifics on any interviews... I'm not commenting on lab results... I'm not commenting on any information we've derived from tips."

In fact, the press conference was far more sparse in details and progress reports than reporters, family, and friends were accustomed to hearing. There is hope that the newfound reticence is due to favorable circumstances with regard to the case.

Police continue to search for two vans -- one green and one silver -- and their occupants that they believe were at the Hollywood School playground the day Nevaeh Buchanan went missing. Nevaeh's mother, Jennifer, stepped out to check on her daughter and only found her scooter at the nearby school.

Nevaeh Buchanan has been missing since around 6:30 p.m. Sunday evening, May 24.

Giving family and friends and searchers hope that the police might be nearing a solution to the case was also the statement Sheriff Crutchfield made at the Monday press conference: "You have to realize we aren't telling you everything we know."

Two of Jennifer Buchanan's friends, George Kennedy and Roy Lee Smith, both convicted sex offenders, continue to be held in custody, being investigated for possible parole violations. George Kennedy's restrictions included maintaining a certain distance from children, from where they congregated, and from women who have or are associated with children.

But the question most continue to ask is: What possesses a mother of a small child to consort with known sex offenders? And not just known to authorities and to others, but to Jennifer Buchanan as well.

And not that her two male sex offender friends were involved in such activity, but many pedophiles and/or sex offenders like to share information and form groups or clubs. There exists the possibility that Nevaeh Buchanan was taken by someone associated with Kennedy or Smith, perhaps without their knowledge.

There is also the troubling news that Jennifer Buchanan failed part of her polygraph test. Although it is uncertain what portion of the test she failed and whether or not it matters with regard to the case of her missing daughter, police report that Buchanan is cooperating with investigators.

But when a missing child investigation has a mother that lies to officials, associates with convicted sex offenders, and sees a decreasing number of tips and leads, it may be indicative of a case growing cold due to lack of evidence and information and not that things have taken a turn toward resolution.
