Never Forgotten

Charlotte Kuchinsky
As some of you know, I have adopted a local nursing home where I take gifts at Christmas, Mother's Day, Father's Day and the like. I do this as much for myself as for the residents. It helps me stay grounded in the realization that without their sacrifices nothing I now have would have been possible.

Unlike some who would say the elderly have outlived their usefulness, I consider them our greatest treasure. If we would dare to listen to them, imagine the mistakes we might avoid. More than that, think of the stories they have to share.

After the sudden passing of one of our own at Associated Content, I decided this year to do something a little different. I have written a poem to go along with their gift and card. Its intent is to let them know they are still remembered and loved.

You are not forgotten.
Many will think of you
Not just this holiday
But all the whole year through.

We know we'd not be here
Had you not forged our road.
Your gifts have been many;
And you've lightened our load.

The knowledge you carry
We cannot hope to gain.
We have not yet suffered
Your anguish and your pain.

You taught us how to live.
You taught us brotherhood.
With your love you guided
Down the path that was good.

For this and so much more
It's time you get your due
Though the message is small
We hope you know it's true.

Please know that you are loved
For all that you have done.
Your bravery and courage
Ensured our wars were won.

We are very grateful.
To hold you in our souls.
You're part of all we do.
Through you we reach our goals.

So on this holiday
Please know you are a part
Of all the memories
Treasured inside the heart.

I challenge each of us to remember this holiday season all of those individuals who have touched and enriched our lives. We never know how long they will be with us. Certinaly, our dearly departed friend is a testament to that fact.

very nice. Life is much shorter than we all expect. I truly believe that one must be grateful to those in the present because only Lord knows how long they will be in our future

Very touching. This is truly heartfelt. We must appreciate those brave souls who blazed the trails, opened closed doors, shed light on darkness, and many times suffered for it. I know you don't enjoy too much limelight but Godbless you for your thoughtfulness. And in that vein does anyone know what happened to cute little Artme?

Absolutely fantastic! You are 100% correct Charlie; the elderly are our greatest treasures. I'm certain that our (America's) growing problems correlate w/the shrinking of the Greatest Generation...our ww2 folks.
