When I was 4 years old, my mother rushed me to the emergency room. The doctor informed her that I was "just" having a migraine headache. The doctor prescribed some medicine that turned me into a vegetable, and told my mother I would never graduate from high school.
My migraine headaches include pain, and tunnel vision with flashy-spots. Then I get a high fever and become unresponsive. I have been told this is a severe migraine.
There are many different levels of migraines, and many different symptoms. Most people I have met who have migraines have some sort of light sensitivity, or vision impairment, severe pain, and miss school or work.
If you are not sure if you suffer from migraines, please consult your doctor.
If you have been diagnosed with migraine headaches and are under medication, you must consult your doctor before making any changes to your medication.
Fortunately I have a very strong and determined mother. She was determined to find a cure. My mom asked around and found out exactly what I needed.
The "cure" is actually a vitamin regimen. The vitamin is called Pantothenic Acid. Do not be alarmed by the word "acid". Pantothenic Acid is another name for vitamin B5, or Calcium Pantothenate. I will refer to this vitamin as "Pantothenic."
I take 250 mg of Pantothenic 3 times a week. I recommend taking this vitamin during or after eating. (Avoid taking any B vitamin on an empty stomach.) I also recommend taking Pantothenic in the morning. B vitamins can keep you awake at night, so it is best to take Pantothenic early in the day.
If I have times of high-stress, I will double-up and take 500 mg on one day. Or take Pantothenic 4 days in one week. High-stress can include good or bad stress. It does not matter if you are moving, going through a trauma, or have a super achievement.
You can double-up on Pantothenic from time to time, but I recommend no more than 500 mg, 5 times a week to prevent migraines. (And, that is only for special stressful times; not for prolonged periods of time.) Pantothenic can affect your metabolism, so you want to stay within a moderate amount. 250 mg, 3 times a week, should be sufficient.
If I do have any symptoms of a migraine, I take an extra Pantothenic right away no matter what time of day. My early warning symptoms are an achy feeling and unreasonably grouchiness. If I see tunnel vision or flashy-spots, I take a Pantothenic immediately and go lay down if possible. For me, the flashy-spots mean a migraine is right around the corner. By taking the Pantothenic, I will avoid the full-blown migraine. But, I also know that my body needs a moment of rest. It is important to listen to your body. There are different symptoms, so these warning signals may not work for you. Learn your own body's signals.
If you do get a migraine headache, Pantothenic can help you recover more quickly. Instead of 2 or 3 days, I have been fine within an hour or two. However, I strongly recommend taking it easy upon recovery. Let your body totally heal. You will know if you listen to your body. For me, the sluggishness and tired feelings all go away.
I will admit I have had a few migraine headaches since I was 4 years old. All my migraine headaches or symptoms have occurred after major times of stress, poor nutrition, lack of sleep, and when I am not taking my vitamins. I have had enough migraine headaches to do everything I can do to keep from having another one. I have had few enough migraines to be considered a miracle after the initial diagnosis. And, yes, I have graduated from high school and college.
If you get migraines, you can take extra special care of yourself if you know a stress is coming, like moving. You should also take extra special care of yourself the 2nd day after any big stress. For example, the 2nd day home after traveling is a good day to take special care. My family calls it the "let down."
There are many things you can do to help alleviate migraine headaches. Eat nutritious food, especially nuts and green vegetables. Stop smoking and drinking alcohol, which remove nutrients from your body. Or, at least cut back. Keep your stress levels low. You can do that by exercising or meditating. Get good sleep. And, if that is not enough, take 250 mg of Pantothenic 3 times a week.
