Never Willing to Settle

Donna Cavanagh
I live for the fighting spirit
I do not accept fate and just try to make do
This attitude throws me into a fit of anger
It is an attitude I am not willing to pursue

I will go kicking and screaming
I will never be the chick who grows old with grace
I will not rely on sympathy to get me through my days
Self-pity is not a friend I am willing to embrace

I will be the pain in your ass
I will fight for my right to live as I see fit
I will see each day as a new lease on life
I will not throw up my hands and just decide to quit

When my time is done and my life comes to a close
When my adventure in this world ceases to be
I want people to say "Damn, this chick knew how to live
She never settled; she saw all she wanted to see"

Then feel free to unplug the machines
I will go quietly and happily into the night
Knowing I never "made do" with what life doled out
Content I never surrendered or gave up the fight

As one who has suffered from a very unpopular disease, I say you are right, never give up the fight to make all your own tomorrows better. Great poem!

Great poem, Donna... first time in my life I've read a poem with the words "pain in your ass" in it... LOL.
