New Antibiotics for Infections Are Zyvox, Doripenem and Tygacil
The Newest Antibiotics to Fight Infections Since 2005
One of the newest medications to fight infection is Zyvox. Zyvox is being used to treat certain bacteria that have a resistant to other antibiotics. The medication is used in treatment of some infections that are deadly. The bacteria Enterococcus that resembles streptococci are microorganisms that are resistant to some antibiotics. These bacteria can cause severe infection in the heart valves, urinary tract, stomach or intestines. This drug fights the super germ enterococcus that also attacks wounds from surgery. This can be life threatening. However, the new Zyvox treats these kinds of gram-positive bacteria. There have not been these types of antibiotics in 35 years. The medication is given by IV or orally. Zyvox is an exceptional medicine.
Another newer antibiotic is Doribax or the generic brand Doripenem. Doribax fights against pathogens. This medication treats complications from nosocomial pneumonia, urinary, and abdominal infections. The use of this drug will depend on the kind of infection it is being used to treat. The drug is given by injection or by IV. It also is taken by mouth after a few days of being given by injection.
Doripenem is a synthetic drug, which is in a class of antibiotics known as a carbapenem. A carbapenem class drug is in relation to Penicillin. The side effects to this drug are a rash, headache, diarrhea, phlebitis and nausea.
The next new antibiotic is called Tygacil. This one also is used for the kinds of infections that have a resistance to some other antibiotics. This medicine is administered in the hospital by IV. Tygacil is used to treat bacteria with an unknown cause. The infections in the stomach or skin are some that are treated with this drug.
About two million USA patients become infected every year with bacteria while hospitalized. There is an estimate of about 90,000 die from the hospital-acquired infections. These infections are around 70 % resistant to some of the other antibiotics.
The drug Tygacil is in the class that is relative to tetracycline. However, the new medication is known to treat infections that tetracycline cannot fight. Most bacteria become resistant to antibiotics. The resistant bacterium is growing so fast that a new medicine is welcome. However, this antibiotic is effective in fighting staphylococcus, E. coli and a wide assortment of bugs.
It is important the doctor make the right selection of antibiotics the first time. The quicker the medicine is started the better.
