New Apartment Searching Tips

There is More to it Than Just Rent

Are you in the market for a new apartment? There are 7 things that you need to consider before you sign a lease.

New apartment search tip #1 -Location, location, location.

An apartment 20-miles away from work doesn't seem like such a bad idea until you realize that your route to work experiences gridlock every morning. What should be a 30-minute drive might end up taking you an hour or longer.

New apartment search tip #2 - Site amenities.

Is having a swimming pool on the property really important to you? It better be if you choose an apartment complex that has one. You will end up paying for site amenities that you don't use. If you really want them, that's great. Seek them out. However, if you don't want them, seek a minimalist apartment complex. It will help you save on rent.

New apartment search tip #3 - Maintenance program.

Be sure to know how often you can have your apartment repainted, what type of service you can expect if an appliance breaks down, and what the rules are for maintenance personnel entering your apartment. You don't want to end up in an apartment complex that doesn't take maintenance seriously.

New apartment search tip #4 - Stairs.

Having a third floor apartment accessible only via stairs might not appear to be a big deal, but what would happen if you injure your leg in a car accident? How will get to your apartment, much less bring up groceries? Do you really want to haul groceries up three flights of stairs week after week?

New apartment search tip #5 - Rules, rules, rules.

Are you allowed to bring your cat? Can your neighbor keep that German Shepard in his one-room apartment? In other words, be very explicit when you ask questions of the apartment complex representative. Some apartment complexes even have regulations regarding decorations you can have on your porch. You need to enter a lease with your eyes completely open.

New apartment search tip #6 - How safe if the area, really?

A lot of single women are very concerned about their personal safety, and rightly so. It can be difficult to tell if the community you are moving into is truly safe or not. It is always wise to research the area first. Hopefully you will be able to come across an objective assessment of the safety of the area. However, a lot of crimes simply go unreported. In addition, you won't want to rely on the apartment complex to provide you with information. They have a vested interest in making you feel safe when the truth might be very different.

New apartment search tip #7 - What is in the surrounding area?

You might find the greatest apartment within your price range only to discover that there are no convenient grocery stores, gyms, or shopping in the area. You won't want to drive twenty minutes in order to grab something for dinner. Take a nice long drive in the area of the apartment complex before you sign anything. It just might save you a lot of time in the long run. The more research you can do ahead of time, the better off you will be. Choosing a place to live is not a decision that should be taken lightly.
