New App Ideas for the iPhone that Would Be Guaranteed Hits

Apps They Should Create

Nancy Lichtenstein
Any iPhone owner at one point or another gets to thinking about apps they should create. The iPhone app store is the ultimate in instant gratification; I've probably spent more money there on a whim in the month fooling around when I can't get to sleep at night than I have on regular entertainment in the past year. Ninety nine cents isn't an expenditure you can't justify, even if it's nightly-most people's morning coffee costs way more than that. Inevitably, though, browsing through it or searching will leave you with ideas for apps they should make.

The first of the apps they should make I like to call "the best song you never heard." I haven't forgotten the genesis of the iPhone as an MP3 player, and although I have to admit that for me, the music part has been eclipsed by the phone, the camera and the game console, this is still an important application. I'm a new music aficionado and I would love an app that gave me a new song to listen to, for free, daily. It would be a great way to get attention for new bands and might well spur impulsive sales in the iTunes store.

Another one of the apps they should create would be a personal shopper app. For me, this would be primarily useful for holiday shopping. I'm a black belt fashionista so I can pick outfits out myself. However, I would love to be able to key in a few facts about the loved one I'm shopping for and have the app make gift suggestions to me based on the store I'm in. There are already so many apps that rely on GPS that this should be easily doable, and for people who are less confident about their own fashion choices, being able to input their style, size, occasion, and color preferences and have suggestions made in real time would make shopping a much more pleasant experience. They haven't begun to scratch the surface yet on apps they should make about shopping.

Finally, one of the most entertaining but useful apps they should create would be an instant advice columnist. You could enter any dilemma, from the trivial (it's 5:50 and the metered parking stops at 6; should I put a coin in or risk it?) to the serious (I've broken up with my boyfriend three times already; should I give him one more chance?), and get friendly but firm advice. This app would be even more fun if you could choose the character who was dispensing the advice. They could offer choices like Dear Abby, Tim Gunn, Obi Wan Kenobi and Albert Einstein, and the character you selected would color the advice with their personality. I have no idea how easy or difficult it would be to develop such an app but I guarantee it would be a hit.
